He seems a little better, though maybe he’s just healing or maybe he’s getting better at hiding it. He does seem to be kind of a private person, now that she thinks about it. “I would like to begin by reassuring you all—I haven’t detected a single trace of Ethan after you defeated Eyghon. He was stabbed, but both of knew enough rudimentary healing magic for that not to do too much other than slow him down. I’d like to hope it would make him rethink some of his choices, but he’s far too stubborn for his own good, I suspect.”
“So he’s probably going to be back, huh,” Xander guesses, and Giles just sighs.
“I’d hoped to have seen the last of him twenty-one years ago, but that didn’t exactly go as I wished, either. I don’t suppose this will either—but at least we’re a little more prepared. On that note, I believe I should return Kryvirk Kala to you. You should know—” he begins, and the ghost immediately pops out of the sword like he’d been waiting for Giles to try to say something about...something. He’s trying to look casual, but that timing? It absolutely isn’t, any more than Xander is actually being casual right now—and huh, Willow actually did have a point, huh, because the instant the sword’s back in his hand he actually genuinely relaxes. The instant.
“Had to torture him, though made sure to heal him after,” he states like that’s an end point, which is fascinating—what could Giles have possibly been about to say that Kryvi would find embarrassing?
Xander does raise an eyebrow at that, though. “I’m guessing that was part of Giles’ plan, so we’re not having a talk about that one, but I’m watching you, mister.”
“Oh, I’m always up to something. You’ll have to watch me all the time.” And yeah, thinking about it, they’re always like this, aren’t they? Even though Xander just rolls his eyes at that, rather than actually flirting back. He still looks a little pleased about it, though.
“According to Sullivan, the circus was never registered with the city, and returning to the spot, as with many stories of ghost circuses and fairs, there’s no trace. I found this package on the front doorstep, however.” He hands over a big square that looks like it’s been folded in one of the smallest tents, and Xander takes it gingerly, unwrapping it to find...an aerial hoop? That looks like it’d be fun to play with, and their devildork looks torn between agreeing with Buffy’s internal analysis and being highly disturbed. “It does happen to be possessed. However, I only detect gratitude from it, not deception or malice. I believe it’s meant as a kind of thank you.” That’s...really sweet, in a gruesome sort of way, but then, maybe they’re going to get used to that sooner or later. And then Giles sighs again. “Finally, I’d like to apologize. I’m not particularly good at it, but I want you to know I’m sorry for how I’ve previously treated you.”
Buffy’s only seen Xander so affected when he’d gotten that letter. He’s just blinking, entirely frozen, and kinda looks like he wants to fade into the floor. Again. “That’s fine,” he replies automatically.
“No, you deserve one, and perhaps the timing is better this way. I’d meant to have this finalized by, well. When we’d all been spoiling you. However...the paperwork finally went through, and I went through the trouble of getting a licence, to confer more legitimacy. If you were able to attend classes without attracting undue attention, then I was capable of the same.” He proudly displays the paperwork—and wow they actually have a detective agency. Though he’d gone with Night Investigations, which...actually is pretty accurate. They do a lot of their hunting at night. “I was tempted to use ‘tenebra’ or ‘tenebris’, but sometimes simple if memorable is better for marketing purposes. Most don’t speak or read Latin, unfortunately.” He’s not prepared for Xander to actually teleport to his side like the devildork he is and engulf him in a hug, but rather than looking disgusted or uneasy he merely looks a little embarrassed. He really is coming around. “I would have named you as the owner, since you do most of the work, but again, as this is largely for appearances—”
“Thank you,” Xander mutters into the tweed, and this seems as good a time as any for another group hug.

Buffy had hoped the apologies would have calmed Xander down, but he’s still stiff in a way that says he’s trying not to be twitchy. Then again, now that she’s thinking about it, they still don’t know what happened with Ethan. That’s probably why he was gone so long, that or maybe trying to use magic (maybe visiting, uh...Freya, right, though she might keep teasing Giles by getting it wrong anyway) to make his soul heal faster.
