Maybe checking random tents isn’t the best plan, but it’s the only one Willow has. Her magic’s good, now, but not that good. Though given how often they tend to lose Xander, maybe she should learn a tracking spell as soon as possible.
And then a voice comes out of the dark and she jumps. “You’re where you’re not meant to be.”
“Oh, I’m sorry! I got lost looking for my friend! I don’t know if you would have seen—” Only now that she’s actually turning in the direction of the woman, she realizes that maybe it’s not as easy as all that, because her eyes are milky white in the flickering light of the candle. “Um. I’m really, really sorry.”
“Worry not. I can hardly blame you for failing to see, considering the circumstances. Not all can navigate as I can, nor would I wish that upon them. I was in the middle of getting ready to open, so am not entirely ready for visitors.” The woman lights another candle. She sounds slightly amused as she continues, even if she’s hiding her face behind a scarf and Willow can’t exactly see her expression. “I say this, but you are not my first visitor this day, though even if one of them happens to be the one you’re looking for, I cannot tell you where they have gone since. The Ringleader would be unhappy; he wishes for no distractions for his people, so it is in all our best interest if he not be told. It is not good to be alone, in times like these. However, I wish to give you a token of good luck.”
“O-oh, that’s not necessary,” the young witch stammers, shivering a little, because as friendly as the tone is, that feels like a threat. Or maybe more of a warning?
“This trinket is of no use to me. It’s known as a Witch’s Heart, though I’m afraid it’s incomplete.” Before Willow can wig too hard about that one, the woman’s pressing an amulet into her hands and waving her away. “Now, go. It wouldn’t do for either of us to be scolded for something as understandable as a friend’s worry.”
She could argue, claim that she doesn’t deserve this gift, press it back into those old wrinkled hands. She can feel the history within. This is old, and valuable, and while there’s no magic inside it right now, the potential is incredible.
But it’s calling to her, and not in the scary seductive corrupting way. Here is balance, an anchor so she doesn’t lose her way, and the lady does seem genuinely like she wants Willow of all people to have it, so she just whispers a quick, “Thank you!” as she exits.
