Note: HERE THERE PROBABLY BE BUFFY/JJBA SPOILERS

Kakyoin won’t lie. He’s been enjoying getting to know their new allies, and years of having worked with Jotaro as his partner, but there’s something different about this particular case no matter how much the man might stare at him nearly blankly (perhaps with a hint of irritation) when confronted.
Something has changed. And yes, Jotaro will likely deny it, but he’s hardly the only stubborn asshole around here, and as glorious as it’s been generally making thorns of themselves in the sides of this ‘Wolfram & Hart’ organization, Kakyoin needs the truth, here. For lack of a better way to put it, he’s more present, less distant, than he’s been in years. Of course, he’s capable of approaching this more subtly than Mr. Straightforward peering over his shoulder.
The newest information, brought to them by a ghost, is helpful for context. They’ve gotten most of what they can out of the place itself. Even spying on them (and making them all even jumpier than they already are, under the circumstances) is losing its appeal, mostly because other than this Sawyer, who at the least is a good liar and was probably specifically targeted because the pink-haired asshole believed he knew something, they’ve learned what they can. Though Kakyoin is certainly of the opinion that there’s no room for another with this same aesthetic.
The only reason they’re still here is that Kakyoin’s been going through what records remain—some of which have been shared, and some of which were certainly not. Hierophant is pretty good at getting places he’s not supposed to be. With the new knowledge, they’ve been gathering information about warehouses associated with W&H. It’s unlikely that an enemy so careful would use a location not under his own control, but it’s a lead, and hopefully the Speedwagon Foundation, Passione, and hopefully Council investigators can manage to gather information about them to confirm this without meeting the same fate as Avdol’s unfortunate informant.
One man, face half melted off, was able to recall that apparently someone had ordered an improvement to the lighting in order to impress a visiting dignitary, but no visits were scheduled for a bit and certainly not on the day of the attack, so it’s likely that was merely an excuse. Given that he’d been here on that day, probably putting in the finishing touches, it’s highly unlikely that the attack had been accidentally preemptively triggered.
Fortunately, Acheron-san had no concerns about letting them remove the sculpture. If there are magical traces of some kind, Kakyoin certainly can’t find them. That being said, it certainly hasn’t revealed all its secrets thus far, even through a fairly thorough inspection. “This isn’t the most recent sculpture, the one that Love-san said was ordered shortly before her unfortunate demise.”
Jotaro doesn’t have to voice a question out loud, just raising an eyebrow, for Kakyoin to effortlessly interpret one. “Weathering. It wouldn’t be in this kind of shape after a few weeks, even with sealant. And see here, a small drilled hole?”
Jotaro’s already close, but he leans even closer, the slight flash a sign that he’s summoned Star Platinum, though he’s not bothering to send his Stand out for that much more of a close look, just using his Stand’s precise gaze. “More than one. Guess that handyman uniform wasn’t just for show.” They’d even discovered evidence he’d tampered with the emergency doors to herd people to the deadliest spots in the building, and some evidence that he’d also considered altering the normal lighting as well before concluding, reasonably, either that it’d be difficult to switch between the two or that the lights would be unlikely to work following the holy water deluge, possibly both, so that’s probably a bit of an understatement.
Still, it’s one thing to know all of this intellectually, another for Jotaro to be pointing it out. “He’d tested using this for his trap before deciding it wasn’t viable. How much does this guy know?”
His friend considers that carefully, hands jammed firmly into his pockets. He’s actually on edge, Kakyoin notes with detached interest, though he’s trying very hard not to be. Kakyoin’s own assessment had found the man to be a credible threat, yes, but having Dr. Jotaro Kujo, of all people, confirm it, even indirectly, was a little sobering. “More of a Renaissance man than that asshole Rohan,” he decides finally, the low rumble of his voice a little menacing. “Not an actual doctor, maybe, but some medical training, especially in anatomy. Physics and chemistry. Josuke says he wouldn’t have noticed if ‘Geoffrey’ hadn’t reacted.”
“You think he’s new to taking on alternate identities?” he tries to clarify, and Jotaro shakes his head deliberately and emphatically.
“Don’t think he would’ve cared if not for the timing on the traps. He might’ve miscalculated on timing, despite probably having rehearsed it. Or he was delayed for some reason.” Yes, that’s true—he could probably have easily convinced Josuke he was undercover or lured him away to be killed if not for the fact that it had been a matter of minutes before the sprinklers went off. Unfortunately, that leads to another conclusion, one Kakyoin had been trying not to consider, but then, he couldn’t turn his eyes from the truth forever.
“Could he have learned all of that just putting on different identities, like a con artist?” Jotaro isn’t one to mince words or be too delicate about this.
“Possible. Unlikely. He’s older than he looks.” And is very possibly susceptible to holy water, just like the demons he had been targeting. Which might mean a demon or vampire like DIO—and one smart enough to use the extra years for more than just petty revenge. No wonder Jotaro is so on edge.
Well, Kakyoin’s next question won’t put him any more at ease, but at least it’s a distraction. “Who is she?”
Green eyes stare at him flatly, unimpressed. “Who?”
Yes, that’s just about the response he expected. “Buffy-chan. You’ve been acting differently since shortly before we met her.”
Jotaro shifts slightly on his feet, hand leaving his pockets to grab his hat. “I don’t know what you mean.” As usual, he’s a terrible liar.
“Jotaro, please.” He’s not one to use such words lightly, and Jotaro sighs, pulling the hat lower.
“I have memories that don’t make sense,” he responds bluntly, which is an absolute shock. Kakyoin had prepared himself for a longer fight, harsher debate, perhaps traded insults. This must really have been bothering him, if he’d given in so easily.
“The work of an enemy Stand User?” he guesses, and Jotaro just shrugs.
“We all do, with the transition. Memories of a future that doesn’t exist. Guess I just got it worse.” He’s making light of it, like it doesn’t matter, like he doesn’t care.
“I’ll help,” he promises, and that’s just the slightest hint of a smile.
“We’ve got more important shit to worry about, too.” Too? But he doesn’t elaborate on that point, either, and as usual Dr. Kujo is infuriatingly right. Whoever this enemy is, they can’t afford distractions.
