SPOILERS for Turnabout Histories
Miles full-body flinches. Maybe it’s better that I not know, but I’ve never been good about staying away from forbidden knowledge like that. He gathers himself a little to speak, but he’s clearly still basically panicking, so I decide to lend him a hand. “Let me guess, cold and scary like the Von Karmas?”
He collects himself and then, slowly, unable to make eye contact, he shakes his head. “It—the opposite, actually, but—yes, terrifying would be one of several adjectives I would use.”
I blink, confused. “...wait, what, I was super friendly? How’s that terrifying?” I—okay, it might be a little easier to picture, like this, somewhere a little closer to reality. But I’m not following. “And, hold it, why would Von Karma be okay with that?”
“Because it obtained results,” Miles states simply, shivering a little before he looks directly up at me, making eye contact. “Imagine a prosecutor no doubt as ruthless as I had been, in your world. Now imagine one who could convince any witness, any defendant, any judge, any defense attorney that had not been previously warned and believed said warning that you were their best friend, that you believed in truth and justice only to find their weaknesses and exploit them.”
...I wish I’d never asked. And from the look on his face, Edgeworth happened to catch that stray thought, whether or not he wanted to.
“I believe he justified it to himself, taught by Von Karma to notice small flaws that ‘indicated their guilt’ or some such. Told himself that if he ever met one who was not guilty, he’d spare them, but, of course, when you’re looking for sin, surprisingly, you seem to find it in plenitude.” At this, Miles manages a wry smile. “He wasn’t fully certain of his path, questioning it constantly, which turned out to be absolutely the only thing he could use against me, since I...wished to save him, just as I had all those years ago.”
I don’t bother to hide the grin. This really is the same little Miles from all those years ago. He pretends to frown and shakes his head fondly, but I know now he’s just as sentimental.
“Anything else had failed. I could tell his overtures of friendship were shallow. Genuine to some degree, perhaps, as he was lonely and empty, but...he would turn on me the second he could. And yet I—” He swallows again.
“At least you don’t need to worry about it anymore, and you know that,” I suggest, and he grabs his arm but he looks thoughtful and nods.
