Chapter Summary: It takes Miyamoto a bit, but she finally works out why Natsukawa's playing this the way she is.

It takes a couple meetings for Miyamoto to realize. Honestly, she’s not used to playing the game, so she has an excuse for bein’ slow. Sure, there’s the stuff about friendship an’ happiness an’ all that, but more to the point, she’s been brought in to shake things up.
Akiyama’s Natsukawa-sama’s friend an’ all, but she ain’t not traditional. The Aiki DNA’s fully intact, in that one. An’ if ya wanna think about it that way, Aiki’s the most traditional there is, even if it don’t seem that way. It’s clear Natsukawa-kun thinks her sis is soft. Which, once it’s clear it’s not only allowed but encouraged, Suna makes a point of hurling herself tantou first and being driven into the pavement. Maybe it won’t make a lick of difference, but it’s fun. Maki-san’s amused an’ even probably slightly approvin’ that she wants ta play this whole yakuza game her way but he can’t say so. Takemura-san probably thinks the Clan is steerin’ in the right direction but can never give a straight answer to anythin’. Natsukawa-sama has her own small group of hand-picked people, but if anythin’ they’re even more sticks-in-the-mud than most of the Clan (she’s countin’ Wakabayashi in that list). Kanemoto’s sympathetic but still kinda conventional. Hattori an’ some of the new crowd can’t stop whinin’ about profits or some such. They’re all loudmouths who can’t stop sayin’ how things should go, an’ it’s clear Natsukawa-san’s sick of it. Bringin’ Miyamoto inta the mix, encouragin’ her ta be as wild as she (and occasionally he) wants, it’s all ta send a message, loud an’ clear.
The thing for a traditional yakuza to do would be to just…rub her out. They’d taken a chance on the Kumai, and that bet didn’t pay, so it’d make sense to kill her, if only as an example. Hell, she was puttin’ her little empire in jeopardy, and sure, they were friends way back, but puttin’ the entire Clan in jeopardy for friendship is a gamble, an’ given the Amaya-kai troubles, a strong stance would make sense.
Keepin’ her like a pet says this Natsukawa-sama’s gonna play things different. She’ll allow people to see her as weak and ain’t gonna be lettin’ her advisers call the shots.
It’s a ploy, a feint, showin’ such vulnerable spots ripe for the stabbin’. The thing is, it’s a conscious decision on her part. Obviously, the ‘showing our strength’ approach hadn’t been working for the Amaya-kai, given the whole thing with Kumai’s betrayal. And Natsukawa-sama enjoys being underestimated, striking out when her enemies least expect it. So that’s the plan—Miyamoto’s the canary in the coal mine, only armed to the teeth and ready to rumble.
