“Welcome back, An—” Cordy’s voice trailed off as she saw he wasn’t alone.
The vampire didn’t stop. “He’s a friend of mine. And an expert on Japanese magic.”
“I wouldn’t say that,” Yosuke protested, smiling and waving a little at the cute little woman at the front desk. “I just happen to know a few things, that’s all.”
He was pulled into a room that was probably Angel's office, and some odd oval-type rock with odd scratches that might be purposeful or just weathering was shoved at him. He picked it up, trying to see if he got a feel for evil right away—many cursed objects, of all, were that 'beat you up about the head obvious' about it, but no such luck. In fact, the rock was so blindingly normal and boring that he was tempted to just put it down and walk awa—
Wait, no, back up a sec. Bakemono didn't go to the extreme of interacting with, much less holding hostage, humans on the basis of a completely boring, this-isn't-worth-anything rock.
         Interesting.
He pulled out a monocle he'd borrowed from a slightly terrifying but not directly threatening English yĆ«rei. The ghost had explained that the glass was enchanted to be worth more than a magnifying glass for examining detail, which had since been proved several times over. He pulled out gloves as well, since no one in their right mind touched a potentially cursed object with their bare hands—or paws—more than they had to. He wouldn't have even done so at first if that wasn't, unfortunately, a big part of his ability to evaluate the properties of magical items.
“I…I know it’s none of my business, but…the man in your apartment…”
Yosuke glanced up, the monocle making his eye look unnatural and large. “No, it isn’t any of your business,” he answered cheerfully. Something guarded in his face told the vampire that this meant more. Than usual, that was.
“You haven’t…You told me you weren’t interested in that sort of thing.” Of course, it'd been quite a while since they'd seen each other last, both stowaways on a ship shortly after Angel had gotten his soul, but he hadn't expected the young kami to change so much in so brief a time. As far as he'd been aware, that wasn't a characteristic of kami.
“I was wrong,” he shrugged, bending down to peer at the artifact again.
“You’re not…just using him.” The question came out as a statement, but still Yosuke somehow understood.
“Nope. He knows what I am and accepts me anyway. He’s amazing.” The answer had been meant to come out a little more neutral, Angel could tell, but somehow the genuine affection and care came out anyway.
“I didn't think that was allowed,” the vampire continued, knowing that his friend really wanted him to shut up, but curious nonetheless.
“Ehh, what do I care. Rules schmules. Besides, it's not like we're married.” Apparently, that made all the difference in the world. Perhaps it sounded ridiculous, but the rules of magic were different than ordinary common sense would dictate. “Ohhkay, sorry about this, but it looks like this might take a while. It's ancient, that much I know, but it's hard to judge how much power's contained in this little thing and what exactly the nature of that power is. There's some sort of concealment or misdirection magic, but whether it's an actual spell that someone cast or whether it's an integral part of the artifact I'm not sure.”
The pause, the vampire knew, was begging for a question. As per his species, Yosuke was all about an audience and playing up expectations. “How long is it going to take?”
“A few hours,” came the speedy reply accompanied by a wink, and the kid started drifting into the zone in which he was completely focused on the problem and the rest of the world ceased to exist.
“...Amazing,” Angel stated quietly in a flat tone. No response. “You played up how difficult it was going to be simply to make yourself seem more impressive, didn't you.” Well, they had until the next day. Bakemono were surprisingly, and disturbingly, good at working hostage situations, considering this was the first anyone at Angel Investigations had even heard of such a thing.
“Sshh.” No matter how right Angel was, the job needed done, and the job wasn't easy, or Wesley or Angel would've been able to identify it themselves, rather than needing to call in an outside consultant.
