It had been easy to pretend to be unworried about anything when in front of her girlfriend, but now that it’s just her Faith can admit she’s a little concerned. She’d tiptoe in, but that would be showing weakness and she’s learned not to do that.
It’s a little intimidating to see Dr. Kujo sitting at the table, looming despite the fact that he’s sitting (that’s kind of what happens when you’re so tall). He’s made them both hot chocolate, which Faith has gathered is a kind of emergency thing.
She’s almost gathered her courage to talk, even though she has no idea what to say, when he gestures for her to sit, and she does, suddenly even more nervous than she’d been before. It’s easy when you’ve mutually agreed not to care about each other, because then things like this don’t have to matter, but she’d not sure what to do when they suddenly do, and none of her experience has prepared her for this.
“Do you still need a separate room,” is what he starts with, and she chokes. He simply watches her splutter, something that might be amusement dancing in his eyes, and comes to the conclusion that he’s an asshole and therefore one of her favorite adults.
“I like having somewhere I belong, but I guess I don’t need my own room to do that.” It takes her a minute, between the embarrassment and the thinking about things she’s never had to think about before, to come to that conclusion, but he patiently waits for her to think and doesn’t rush her.
“Damn right,” he agrees readily, lip curling ever-so-slightly in a snarl, and that kind of rude acceptance is something she never knew she actually needed.
She decides to tease him back. “Isn’t this the part where traditionally you’re supposed to offer some kind of shovel speech or something?”
He considers that solemnly, and she decides to have the hot chocolate while it’s still anything resembling hot, giving him time to think. “I might say something about tracking you down if you break Buffy’s heart, but I’m not sure there’d be anything left by the time I got there.” The flat certainty is definitely more terrifying than any specifics he could give; she’ll give him points for that.
“You’re probably right, but...for the first time in my life, I don’t plan on running.” She actually has things to lose, now, but despite her previous assumptions she’s stronger than ever, now.
