Note: HERE THERE PROBABLY BE BUFFY/JJBA SPOILERS

At least this time Darling is somewhat ready and managed to put her hands over her ears before the explosion.  It’s really hard to tell whether that helped at all.  She feels like it did, but that could be just in her head, because this time she could react and do something.  Her ears are still ringing, and everything might be muffled, but several of them might be doing the same thing she is, bracing for impact and not ready to move yet.  Even the Lord of Death, she hopes.
Rubble and dust is falling onto her from above, and it’s not entirely clear where it’s coming from.  The columns and walls had to have been damaged, unless it’s weird Xibalba stuff, and it’d be weird if the night sky itself is doing that but also that sky doesn’t seem to be normal in the first place.
It’s pretty clear that the Captain got fed up with all of this stuff, which Darling understands, but using a grenade in a closed area that they actually happen to be in seems a little…reckless, maybe?
Honestly, as much as she likes Jojo, maybe he’d influenced her a little too much.  He can be pretty reckless, too.
Captain von Stroheim actually helps her up, which is a bit of a shock.  She looks a bit…apologetic?  Embarrassed?  It’s hard to read her expression.  She opens her mouth to speak but is quickly distracted as Mr. Brown glances around the giant axe and quickly shakes his head, pushing them out of the way as something else (probably another blade) smacks into the axe blade.  He pulls out the bow, again, and starts fitting an arrow to the bow.  Rather than finish her thought, the Captain glances around the axe blade instead, pulling out the pistol and taking a few more shots while Darling’s ears are still ringing.
That, unfortunately, seems like it didn’t even work.  Of course, she’s pretty sure the Captain didn’t think it would work completely, either, and her move was more a hope than anything.  Like, hey, they might get lucky and might be able to get through this without too much work.  But it was too much to hope for, really.
She should help, though.  Whisper comes in with an angry screech, because he’s just as done with all of this as they are.  As long as Buluc Chabtan gets at least a little wounded at some point, she can step in.  Though he has to quickly angle around yet another blade, this one seeming more like a saw, rises from a slit between the slabs of stone, extending high enough that it’s not safe flying high.  Which seems a little like overkill, she thinks, because with the swinging axe blades, it’s not like it needs to move up that far.
They probably shouldn’t stay still, though, in case even more unexpected blades come out and they’re staying in place so they’re not already moving and have momentum.  So both she and the Captain move out from behind their hiding place, just in time for another blade to come up uncomfortably close, clanging off the axe blade yet again.
It quickly becomes clear that this particular Lord of Death isn’t exactly willing to play dirty, like Camazotz, and unlike every previous Lord of Death except perhaps Awilix, it’s not like he exactly wants them dead, either.  Well, maybe he does, but that’s not the main point of this, and he’d rather do it himself than use the bat swarms or the original point of the jaguars or whatever.  It’s more that he’s indifferent, that he’d actually be disappointed if they’d gone and died before they’d gotten here, depriving him of the chance to fight and toy with them.
He even likes deflecting or stepping out of the way of the arrows and bullets, for a little while.  Probably it’s novel; she doesn’t know if he’s one of the ones that was exiled in Xibalba and unable to leave, but while they probably had bows way back when, she’s not sure if he’s dealt with too many guns.  Eventually, though, the fact that at most they’ve had slight grazes, mostly from the unexpected blades from the floor or walls than the predictable swinging axe blades and they’ve managed to stay at a distance.  Mr. Brown and Captain von Stroheim are clearly better at setting up a sniper’s perch, but they’re decent at keeping up a running rain of fire as they move, even if it’s not as accurate.  He retrieves his thrown spear a couple of times, but so far they’ve all managed to dodge or deflect the thing.
At some point, though, Buluc Chabtan’s generally low patience (maybe higher than some of the others, but that’s not saying much at all) runs out.  His generally calculating movements and actions become a little more erratic, like he’s swatting at a bee flying around and being a nuisance.  That’s not the worst metaphor, Darling supposes.
She wishes she had throwing knives or something.  Anything to help.  Whisper’s power does help; she can actually feel it working, mostly Heart Runs Empty and not Bleeds to an End.  It’s fairly common, in Darling’s limited experience, that one or the other will be emphasized, and maybe that just means that she’s young and hasn’t developed her Stand too much in comparison to, say, the Captain or Mr. Speedwagon, even focusing most of the effect on one emotion or wound even if no one’s just feeling one emotion at a time, because that would be ridiculous.  It tends to be Bleeds to an End, though, an overly strong emotion causing a wound, and that’s not happening.
It’s not that the Lord of Death isn’t feeling any strong emotions, though.  Clearly that’s frustration, and most Lords of Death have an overdeveloped sense of pride, but the sense she gets isn’t like that.  Even with the frustration, the predominant feeling is that he’s having fun, like he’s treating this all like a cricket or football game.  Some people treat those like they’re their entire life, so for some people it’s really serious, but for a lot of people it’s just some interesting diversion, not a life-or-death situation, and that’s the feeling she gets from this Lord of Death.  If they end up dead, for him it’d just have been a good game, whereas for them, well.  They’ll be dead.  She’d almost even understand the frustration (she’d be frustrated, too) if not for the murderous actions it inspires.
Even then, Whisper’s power is muted.  The fact that they’d only managed to inflict a few scratches so far probably doesn’t help.
It’s slightly frustrating that she doesn’t have any throwing knives, but it’s not like she would have made a habit of it.  Getting caught with a knife long enough to throw with no good excuse and a history of delinquency would not have gone well.  She’d only gotten to practice once, when she’d found them in an abandoned building, and she’d made pleasing progress, but it’s not like she could have taken them with her, and they’d been gone the next time she went.
And—wait, that wasn’t time wasted, because her messing around with various tricks back then gives her an idea.  “Captain!  Mr. Brown!  Do you think you could knock down some more of those axe blades?”  They’re big enough to fit at least five people standing behind them, so hopefully it’ll be fine if she doesn’t get all the angles exactly right.
Captain von Stroheim tosses off a wordless salute in her direction, while Mr. Brown yells out a distracted “Sure!”
Unfortunately, she seems to have caught the attention of the Lord of Death, who, rather than looking worried, grins, bloodthirsty and unbothered.  “What are you planning, little human?” he asks, lumbering in her direction, and…well, that hadn’t been part of the plan, but it doesn’t change too much.  She’d already been running around in circles trying to dodge blades and the deity trying to kill her.  She’ll just need to move faster.
