To be fair, it’s not like false doors have been present in any of the previous Houses. They haven’t had to choose the correct door like they’d had to choose the correct corridor. The main difficulty in every House has been reaching the door, not identifying the correct one.
The next ‘house’ seems almost as dark as the House of the Night; almost, as it doesn’t feel like the gloom is alive, misty ink. It feels more like normal nighttime lighting conditions, when she’d been wandering London at night. Maybe with a weird watchful feeling, but the entirety of Xibalba is like that, so it’s not all that much of a difference. Candles are set carefully in the space, but they don’t illuminate very much, just little glimmers in the dark on the cold stone, mirroring the distant and cold twinkling of the stars above.
As Darling steps into the cool night air, it takes only a moment for her to feel the disruption in the air and pull down the Captain and Mr. Brown, feeling something rush past her hair. The soft glow of hamon and the glow of the Captain’s torch illuminate what had attacked them—a bat. Great. That’s definitely a difference from House of the Night. But it’s not just a giant bat. It’s a Lord of the Night, which is probably the quickest one of them has found them. It’s Camazotz, just as talkative as he’d been when he’d introduced himself. He’s not screaming at them how they’re going to die horribly or introducing himself late after he watches them struggle. He’s not even insisting on taking the glory for himself, because he’s not just attacking by himself. Shortly after, a smaller bat flies at them, but Mr. Brown punches it, surprising it because it (and Darling) were pretty sure it was out of reach. Another one is shot out of midair by the Captain’s shot. He doesn’t want to gloat at them. He doesn’t want to watch them despair, essentially playing with his prey. He’s not fighting his own House. He doesn’t care how they die. He just wants them dead.
Unfortunately, he and his bats blend into the night sky fairly well, even with the lights of the stars above. The light of the torch catches them, but even if it has a wider beam as a semi-military type one, it’s still a beam, so it doesn’t catch everything.
The swarms are a problem, Darling decides quickly. Because the Captain mostly works as a sniper, and her gun is mostly ranged, not short range. She manages to stab one of the bats, but it bites her arm before it dies, which is not great. Mr. Brown heals her instantly. It might be better if he conserves his energy, but then, who knows what kind of diseases or problems could come from being bitten? Never mind what real bats may or may not have; these are special bats, she assumes, capable of things their natural counterparts are not. Just like the jaguars.
Still, it’s good that she had a dagger in the first place.
Whisper shakes his head, Kukulkan speaking through him. “I can help in the Shrieking House.” He is able to affect a few, their stomachs bursting from their greed, too, but there are so many! The darkness shifts, blocking her sight of the stars, and she realizes it’s the swarm moving in a group so they’re harder to see.
One of the candles goes out with the rush of wind from one of the bat’s rushes, which is a worry. With the lights in Panzermensch’s helmet, he probably doesn’t need the light of the candles, especially as they don’t show much, and Mr. Brown has his hamon, and the Captain herself has her torch, so she should be fine as long as she sticks near either of them, but that’s still a deadline of sorts, a time at which all of the natural light would go out and it’d be even harder to see. It’s kind of true in any case; Camazotz probably doesn’t care how many bats die as long as they do, too, and it doesn’t seem like they’re making too much of a dent in the numbers. It doesn’t matter how many of them they kill if it takes only one to kill them back.
At least Mr. Brown’s bow works. And none of the bats seem to be immune to bullets, either. It’s still a problem since they don’t seem to be doing much of a dent in the bat swarm numbers, but it’s not like they’re immune like the Lords of Death, either.
Something slams into her back silently. For a moment, she thinks it’s Whisper. He likes to perch on her back, and the weight is about the same. It’s only for a moment, though, because the claws dig into her back, blood dripping down her back, and she screams as the ground quickly disappears from under her feet. It confirms the fact that Camazotz does not care about gloating about these things.
She sees the Captain and Mr. Robin’s faces, horrified, and quickly getting gun and bow ready for a sniper shot. She feels a little frozen, helpless, the tears flicking at the side of her eyes, and she’s really annoyed that her usual instinct is to freeze up or hide.
And then Whisper shrieks in anger, and her paralysis goes away. She’s changed since she’s met these people. She is ready to protect herself now. She moves her arm to stab one of the bat legs digging into her back, and the Lord of Death shrieks, and now she’s falling.
…Oh, no. She hadn’t thought that part of this plan through.

Finding the door isn’t particularly difficult. They see no sign of the jaguars again, but they don’t really need their help anymore. It might be helpful to move quickly or find the door faster, but it’s not necessary. It seems like there are no further traps or anything else along those lines, so they’re not needed. The brothers are too busy trying to tear each other apart to worry about pursuit. She hears the roars behind them, guttural and animalistic, as they’ve stopped trying to talk to each other in favor of trying to inflict the maximum damage against each other. Darling’s aware that these Lords of Death are her enemies, that they’d wanted her dead, but she still winces to hear it and doesn’t dare look back to see the blood in the water or any further wounds they have inflicted.
