Darling can’t see anything at first, whether it be Mr. Brown or Tohil sneering in smug triumph or even the last time she’d seen the Captain right before the flash, kneeling, broken arm hanging by her side but still defiant. Refusing to give in.  Either way, it’s a blessing.  She doesn’t want to see proof that Mr. Brown is—gone.  Because he was so kind and patient and he’d goof off like Jojo but knew exactly when to be serious, and they both took things more seriously than they let on but they didn’t want to worry anyone either.  As long as she didn’t see anything, she could tell herself he was okay.  Just like with Jojo and Mr. Speedwagon.  As long as she doesn’t see or hear anything that contradicts it, she can keep pretending.
It’s the opposite of the problem with the House of the Night, where in this case it’s too much light rather than a lack of it.  Whisper gets ready, sensing Tohil by emotion rather than sight, but she’s not sure if Panzermensch can fight, given the Captain’s stated limitations with radar.  Do Stands even need to see?  At least they can probably act on their own, because she’s not sure about the Captain but she’s a little too stunned to act, even to defend herself, and Tohil isn’t the type to waste much time on gloating when he could simply take advantage of their grief and fear to kill them quicker and more effectively.
From the sound of it, the weather has died down.  The roar of the hailstones has gone silent.  It’s eerily quiet, and at first Darling thinks it’s all stopped, but it takes her a moment to realize that’s not the case.  A light rain is dripping down onto the hollowed-out base of the tree she’s hiding in.  It’s just the contrast between the roaring wind and howling of the hailstones hurtling to earth to try to hurt them badly and a light drizzle that makes it feel as if all sound has been sucked out of the world.
She’s even doing things like hallucinating Mr. Brown laughing.  She desperately wants him not to be dead, and yeah, sure, she’s heard of people who survive getting hit by lightning, but that’s too unbelievable when this Lord of Death would do everything in his power to ensure the attack was lethal.
But then the hallucination begins to speak.  “You Lords of Death might pride yourselves on your hospitality, but it’s small surprise you don’t get many return visitors,” the voice says, and it sounds exactly like him.
“Mr. Brown!” she yells in excitement.
“I forbid you to do that again,” von Stroheim insists, usually calm voice shaken, for once.
“Not planning on it.”  Mr. Brown sounds amused, but he also sounds like he’s trying to reassure them.
Tohil, on the other hand, does not appear amused at all.  His plans aren’t going the way he expected, true.  “You dare challenge the Lords of Death?” he screeches, but the Captain laughs disdainfully.
“Isn’t that the point of this whole endeavor?  And in any case, technically the Lords challenged us first.”  She’s probably posing, though it’s not like Darling or anyone but probably Tohil can see.
Then again, Mr. Brown survived a lightning strike.  Maybe he can see just fine.  She doesn’t know.
“I WILL KILL YOU!” Tohil has lost any pretense of being calm and collected.
“Hmm.”  Mr. Brown sounds entirely unimpressed.  Her eyesight has begun to return just a little, but she still only makes out a few shapes.  “I don’t know about that.  Let’s see if you can take your own medicine.”
Another flash of light overwhelms her eyes, and she can’t see anything again.  The Lord of Death doesn’t scream, though the gurgle suggests he might have bitten off his own tongue in the attempt not to do so.  Darling quickly resolves not to think about that anymore, partly because the image is disgusting and partly because she doesn’t want to think about anyone, even her enemy, undergoing such pain.  At least if he’s not human, it probably won’t kill him?
“He’s apparently not lightning-proof, but he’s also not Mr. Crispy.  Let’s go look for an exit before he recovers,” Mr. Brown suggests, grabbing her hand and presumably Von Stroheim’s.
“That might be slightly difficult,” the Captain manages, and Darling blinks.  Wait, is that…?
“You must really be feeling bad if you’re joking around like this.  I’d like to heal you, but we should probably at least get out of here first,” Mr. Brown clarifies, and—wait.  Von Stroheim knows how to joke?
“Who’s joking?” she asks flatly, and—honestly, it’s hard to tell.  Darling decides to stop thinking about that, too, in case it gives her a headache.
Whisper spots something hidden in one of the rocks—a stone door blending right into the landscape.  “Over there!”  She points out the location, even though she can’t actually see it.
“Got it.  Thanks, Whisper and Darling,” Mr. Brown still sounds amused, but at least he’d figured that out.  Another downburst attempts to knock them down, but it’s feeble in strength, barely moving them at all.  The hamon user has no hesitation as he leads them to the exit.
Apparently Kukulkan has something to add, because Whisper actually replies before Darling can.  “I do know something about the next House.  Hurry out of here, but be on your guard.”
“That’s cryptic,” the Captain snaps.  Apparently the pain is making her more cranky than usual, which is completely understandable.  Darling would be, too.
“I don’t want to say too much just yet.”  It sounds like the deity is concerned about others listening in, but who, and how?  And why would waiting make any difference?  Is the feeling that Xibalba is actually alive more than just a feeling?  Darling had been under the impression that was just something projected to try to intimidate and scare people into a tense frame of mind.
Mr. Brown pauses.  “I’ll have to let go to open the door.”  It’s apologetic but firm.
“I can see a little.  I closed my eyes the second time,” von Stroheim protests.  Not the fact that he’d had to warn, Darling’s pretty sure, because even if she had Darling hadn’t, and she’s pretty sure the Captain wouldn’t be upset he was thinking about Darling’s feelings and trying to make sure she knew what was going on.  It’s probably more like she’s feeling vulnerable and wants to prove that she’s still competent somehow.
Darling decides to say nothing, just nod, because Mr. Brown can see that.  And then they’re walking out into someplace that feels really warm, but then Darling considers it’s a matter of contrasts again.  It’s just that the previous House had gotten really cold, not that this is any more inviting or welcoming.
