It occurs to Darling that she should have guessed the two know more about weather conditions than she does.  She’s a city girl.  True, she’s sometimes spent time outside her so-called ‘home’, but there’s enough abandoned buildings a thief can hide in to escape the London drizzle, particularly if one can climb and if one is small enough to fit into some tight spaces.
The previous bright sunlight is dimming quickly, removing any pretense at warmth.  It’s probably going to storm, and it’s not like they have too much in the way of a change of clothes.  She vaguely remembers a few books mentioning that freezing cold and waterlogged clothes can lead to hypothermia on their own, even though she doesn’t remember most of the details.  Darling brings out Whisper, having him curl around her shoulders, and notices what looks like a cave, next to the river.  She can’t guess the depth from here, but it’s at least some sort of shelter.  She points it out to the other two.  “Does that work as a shelter?” she asks.
The Captain barely spares it a glance, shaking her head quickly.  She doesn’t even bother to elaborate so that Darling and Whisper can help as spotters.
The clouds look like they’re mimicking the Captain’s mood and the change in temperature, changing from something fluffy and friendly to moody and uninviting.  It’s steadily getting colder, and she shivers a little.
Still, she’s determined to be a help, even though she seems to have annoyed von Stroheim for some reason.  “Well, what about the trees?  We’ve got a lot of choices there.”
Mr. Brown actually looks at her and responds, even if the Captain only speeds up like she’s trying to leave the teenager behind entirely.  The tiny thread of tension in his voice is enough to make her realize that Captain von Stroheim isn’t being mean for no reason.  She’s actually really worried and trying not to show it, which makes Darling even more concerned.  “It’s going to storm.  We don’t want anywhere that could suddenly fill with water or be struck with lightning, because that’ll hit us, too, if we’re too close.”  He considers for a moment.  Darling nearly panics that he doesn’t seem to be breathing, only to see him take one.  He’s just breathing really slow and deep even as her breath speeds up to try to keep up with their pace.  That must be some kind of Ripple thing.  She’d tell him it’s really neat if they didn’t have bigger things to worry about, from the sound of things.  “I actually have no idea if I could survive and channel that with hamon, but I’d rather not test it if I can help it.  Somewhere right next to a river that could flood at any moment isn’t exactly the best idea, which is why we’re heading uphill.  Sticking near the shorter trees might help, but we’ve usually been able to at least stick it out in a vehicle before.”
“Oh.  Okay.”  She has two things to concentrate on, now.  Spot a useful shelter in the short amount of time they have, and not to panic.  It’s really hard to tell which one will be harder, but then, she does have something specific to concentrate on, which can only help, really.  It’s especially important when she can hear the beginnings of a distant rumble that suggests lightning and thunder have made their appearance, and this is all moving much faster than it should, in reality.  It’s been mere minutes.  And they’re getting further up, away from the river, into the trees, but from Mr. Brown’s description, they still haven’t found anything useful, because it’s all still rocky terrain and trees.  Which makes her think that maybe the figure she saw wasn’t just her mind playing tricks on her, after all.  “I think I saw the Lord of Death in this one, watching us.  I’m not sure which one, but they were fast.”  She’s panting a little now, the other two barely showing any sign of exertion, but she knows if she started falling behind they’d give her a piggyback ride, so she’s not slowing them down, really.
“It’s possible that the effect might go away if we defeat him; however, I wouldn’t want to even attempt it until we have reached some sort of shelter.  I don’t want to run the risk if we’re incorrect,” the Captain explains, shoulders still rigid, and Darling smiles and pats her hand, trying to give her some sort of comfort and hope.  It’s still weird, to willingly touch another human being, but it’s good.
It makes her feel a little less broken that the Captain stiffens further before offering a strained smile that seems like it’s been allocated to her by the supply sergeant Mr. Brown himself.  Still, it makes Darling feel good twice over—not only is someone just as bad with touch as she is (her classmates made fun of her, although she suspected some of the boys might’ve had hormonal reasons for being upset about it), but she’d also managed to help out anyway.
Even the ground is getting a greenish dark haze over it, but some of that might be reflected from the clouds, and it’s getting even colder.  Whisper draws ever closer, spreading his feathered wings over his shoulders to try to warm her like some strange sort of scarf even as the both of them have started to shiver in earnest, more than just one or two shivers here and there.
And then she finds herself falling, the others shouting.  Whisper desperately tries to free himself, to get out of the way, but he doesn’t quite manage it, and she hears a crunch and feels something shift in her chest in a way she shouldn’t.  She usually tries to be quiet—she had been a thief, after all, it’s kind of in the description—but she can’t quite manage it this time, breath knocked out of her in a quick huff before she screams.  She’s pretty sure she hit her head, too—she’s a little groggy, but it all happened so fast.
She finally manages to breathe normally after a pained haze, coming back to reality with a sticky wetness at the back of her head she should probably avoid thinking about too much and slightly sore, if healed, ribs.  Mr. Brown has his hand on her arm, and the warmth is flowing in through that point of contact.  He’s muttering something that sounds like it could be a play, which makes him just as much of a nerd as Jojo or Mr. Speedwagon, but if it helps him she’s not going to make fun.  He smiles at her and pulls his hand back when he notices she’s aware again.  “What happened?”  Did they get attacked?  If so, she’s lucky with her friends being here, because they had to have taken care of it (or the Captain was distracting it) if Mr. Brown’s bothering to heal her right now.
“It’s called a downburst, a really fast-moving burst of wind, and if that’s happening this is going to be a really bad storm.  We might need to think about making our own shelter soon if we can’t find anything.”
Darling glances around.  There’s still nothing that stands out.  If anything, the Captain is standing even straighter, so she probably hasn’t found anything, either.  Of course, she’s not entirely sure what he means by ‘making their own shelter’, but she trusts them to know what they’re doing.  Honestly, though, if there are more of these downbursts, or whatever, they really can’t take chances.
