you absolutely could continue on after season 7 in tv.  Slayers aren't immortal.  Slayers can get killed even in a  group. true, you'd probably have to have less solitary enemies, but that's totally possible.  Slayers can be taken by surprise.  Slayers aren't immune to magic.  basically, if an ensemble superhero or superhero school work can function btvs has no excuse. also whedon's 'giles only works in tv because narrators don't work in book form' excuse underlines his lack of creativity again, because it's like, let's ignore the film noir genre entirely for a moment.  so why not make giles...do something else?  characters are not stuck in the same role forever, in fact they shouldn't be unless you're aiming to never have character growth.  which, actually, given what I know from his other shows and movies he's done, I think all the character growth was accidental, so maybe that's actually where his head is at. it's patently ridiculous though
