“I got the timezones right this time?” There’s not a lot of inflection to Jotaro’s words, but Holly can tell what he means by them. Honestly, if he had, she wouldn’t have told him. He wouldn’t show it on his face, or more relevant, since this is a phone call, in his words, but she knows he’d feel incredibly guilty. Not that he should; she’s happy to hear from him at any time, particularly when Sadao-kun’s on tour, and the house is too big and too empty. The worst part is that while she’s a pretty good actor, her son can see right through her, so fortunately she doesn’t have to act.
“No, you got it right, honey, but isn’t it the middle of the night over there?” she responds.
The groan says ‘yes’. “Was up anyway,” he responds, trying to hide the yawn. She’d guess that meant that he was doing laundry or schoolwork or both. “Good day?”
“I had a great day out with my friends!” She talks about her museum visit, and going to see a movie, and going to her favorite restaurant. Other people might say Jotaro’s not listening, or just really quiet, but he does respond. It’s just usually nods or an intense stare or noises like grunts, but if she guesses correctly, he’s trying hard not to just nod off, so he’s not even doing that like he normally would. “And of course I enjoyed my gifts.”
“Mom,” Jotaro grumbles, and she can hear him pull the hat down.
Still, she knows that however embarrassed he gets, he’s happy she’s happy. “I got to keep the key lime pie all to myself; Aizawa-chan and Hida-chan still don’t have that much of a sweet tooth. And the little turtle plush is adorable. I found the perfect place to put it.”
“Yare yare,” he mutters and can’t keep the yawn back this time.
On that note, she’s probably talked his ear off long enough. “I should let you go. I don’t want you falling asleep at your desk again. But before I do, you should know that Mommy loves you very much, and I’m proud of you. Kisses!”
“I will hang up,” her son threatens, but lets her do it.
Other people might question how happy this phone call made her, but the fact that Jotaro doesn’t like phone calls and probably also agonized over the presents for a long time and doesn’t like shopping and did so for her regardless…well, he tends to speak more through actions than words anyway.
