Note: HERE THERE PROBABLY BE BUFFY/JJBA SPOILERS

The Captain hears the sound first, phantom hoofbeats on the rooftop.  Soon after, she smells it, the smell of decay, but as Jojo had said, it’s not as bad as when she’d first smelled it.  Nothing visible accompanies it, not to her own eyes, not to Panzermensch’s.  Still, she can gauge its approximate position and steps out of the way of the charge just in time.  Robin and Jojo yell a warning, though she’s fairly certain Jojo’s was not in English.
She hears the hoofbeats change in tempo as the invisible horse attempts to stop despite the momentum.  The bones rattling indicate, if it wasn’t already obvious, that the demon has made its reappearance.  It appears, it has a sense of drama, but then, from what she’s seen, it is far from alone.
It flickers into view.  Her Stand sees it too, so it’s not just an illusion.  Most likely, then, that means her speculations were entirely accurate.  When Jojo had referred to this as ‘not the real world’, it’s simply another layer, a plane of existence stacked over the real one, and the underworld over which this particular demon presides is another plane it’s merely joining them from.  To her surprise, this time it’s chosen a different appearance again.
The wide bulging eyes remain, but this is its most human look yet, with midnight-black clothes and hat to match its non-supernatural appearing horse in the light of the moon and nearby street lamp.  The painted mask is present, but minimal, understated, even.  It stretches slightly, baring its teeth, irritated at her escape, perhaps.  The movement shifts the shirt so she can see a parakeet where a heart should be beneath translucent skin (and, presumably, muscles).  It even has a sword buckled at its side.  …Actually, it looks vaguely like a Mexican cowboy.  If it was careful, it might be able to approach an unwary victim with little more than its smell to give it away, and that could be easily explained away as some carrion on the side of the road, or maybe a predator hunting its flock.
A white owl swoops in, lands on its shoulder, and listens as it whispers, forked tongue flicking over the syllables, and then flies away.  Surprisingly, unlike the rest of the demon’s other animals, it doesn’t even attempt to attack.  Her first thought is that it’s a messenger of some kind; her second is that she greatly hopes he’s not seeking backup of some kind.
The demon draws the sword at his side and swings at Panzermensch, clanking off the metal.  It might’ve managed to harm her if it had, for instance, used some kind of saw, but as it is its attack fails.  It quickly retreats at the hail of bullets and lone arrow aimed in its direction, though.  It doesn’t appear to be severely inconvenienced in any way, merely irritated, but if it’s irritated enough to keep its distance, that’s still something, particularly if it can see and interact with Stands while not being a Stand User itself.
Jojo continues his trend of mocking creatures that could very easily kill him.  “I’m surprised you didn’t invite us to dinner in this little town of yours.  What’s the matter?  Is the moon-spider finally full, after all these years?”  Darling perks up from where she’s standing behind Robin, jabbing any of the skeletons that got too close with her own dagger.  So Jojo might not just be taunting the demon.
“Why would I offer, when you would never partake?” it replies, and while demons don’t always have to be truthful or be consistent…it had responded similarly when she’d challenged it.
“You’re hiding something,” she notes—true, she might not want to call it on its lies, but she wants to make sure Jojo’s on the same page, and they can’t just converse privately through their Stands, since it can see them and presumably hear them.
The shock on his face says that while he might have known that already, she might have prompted further revelation, so it wasn’t a bad step.  “Wait—no, it’s—if you’d trapped us with your spell, you’d be obligated to eat us.  That’s how the magic works.  Someone wants us alive.  Who—”
Her consciousness skips like an old record.  It’s worse than before, because she has this feeling, like something is missing, but it keeps slipping from her grasp.  She looks, dazed, at her boots, but no, she hasn’t dropped it, whatever it is—
Once she’s aware again, it’s to Pretender dropping a small animal’s body in front of her.  She blinks at it for far too long, flinching a little at each round fired from the gun, only—only with every time, the world sharpens just a little, her mind fogging just a little bit less.
It’s different than anything else she’s seen thus far, she notes once she is able to do so once more.  It’s not just bones.  It’s not just flesh, either.  The creature has skin, if not fur.  Without this, especially without fur, she first misidentifies it as a hairless rat.  Then she sees, through Panzermensch’s eyes, another one of the creatures moving on the opposite building, and simply from its movement, the way it scampers and holds its tail more like a real life animal than its skeletal bretheren, it soon becomes apparent that it’s actually a hairless squirrel, for some reason.  Vaguely, she recalls Pretender or Jojo, or perhaps Jojo speaking through Pretender, she’s not sure, repeating the phrase ‘shoot the mutant squirrels’ until she repeated it to Panzermensch, which was apparently enough for her Stand to act.  Robin is apparently part of that plan, too, as she sees an arrow pierce another attempting to scale the street lamp.  It screams and falls, lying prone on the bloodied sidewalk below.  Her mind clears a little.
The slightly unsettling part is that, previously, she’d been aware something was wrong.  This time, she didn’t even realize, not at first.  Now she’s got targets, though, and just enough mental capacity to follow through.
