idle thought #291

i would like to present to you the ways in which log horizon is similar to amber: it started with the main family named coren (corwin) with the grandfather that is super similar to Oberon. sly and plotting but possibly caring about his family (how real that is is never explained) yet also perfectly willing to scapegoat a relative for PR.
and then there was the whole confrontational scene between shiroe, who is more clearly a hero than corwin but has some similarities in the machiavellian plotting/willingness to not fight fair if it serves his plans (which are actually, more often, for the good of the people) and the machiavellian temptress lady who's been plotting and flitting about in the background and turns out to be a chaos-sowing shapeshifter who would very much like to give shiroe a throne. shiroe has more self-control than corwin in that he does not actually initially give in, so no future merlins (probably), but he does tell her "nah, we work better as enemies, i want no throne" and she gets angry and ready for yet more machiavellian plotting even as she probably still love-hates him.
and while she does rule with an iron fist she's got the velvet glove--people love her and she's got spies and chaos and subtlety on her side. and the name she first gives (which winds up being a lie) is dariella. corwin also keeps things from his allies, though it's worked out for shiroe more than corwin.
even then, his instincts to solve things on his own and not bother other people are a character flaw and are treated as such. he's not perfect. and when she tries her thing he's like "i totally see through you." so in that sense it's probably more like corwin and dara's not-first-meetings, near the Pattern and later confrontations.
rayneshia|lenessia reminds me of coral, someone who seems very weak and powerless but secretly could become a badass and totally has an agenda of her own, even if she's only slowly getting there.
also crusty is totally also a schemer, but generally a noble one, so...i dunno, maybe caine or julian? he's too smart to be gerard. i'm leaning julian because he's intelligent and brutally honest, most of the time (he can play the game, he just doesn't like to because it's a little too much work and it's fun to be honest). and a little bloodthirsty, but everyone in amber is like that.
naotsugu is kind of gerard--very loyal and smart when it comes to combat but not the brightest in other situations.
there's also a bit of random/vialle in crusty & rayneshia|lenessia's interactions. "i'm only hanging out here with you because doing so saves me MORE trouble in the end", and also i could see her as vialle, too. might be blind but don't underestimate her. she's good. just...needed a little help.
henrietta would be fiona, because she can play the game just as well as shiroe (they're actually friends in this, though, which if corwin and fiona got together as a team and started plotting...)
shiroe could also be seen as merlin, as he's more polite and mild-mannered until push comes to shove and then he pushes up his glasses, smirks, and gets to work. with magic.
...and interestingly akatsuki, in that reading, could be seen as the ty'iga, as in 'the bodyguard that will tear you apart silently'. i don't think she's secretly working for dara, though. also shiroe could be read as benedict because benedict is the master strategist and pulls off some equally bonkers moves.
but there's another similarity with corwin. the insistence that shadow-people (people of the land) aren't just toys (npcs).
oh, and the lady who lost her arm like benedict. who is also a combat master.
shadow elf lady(?) in the background controlling dara has to be the logrus. probably. or maybe that makes the "dara" more
of a "jasra"--has a plan, but ultimately ineffectual. ...no, dara's playing the seductive chaosian again. and those totally seem like chaos magic.
...okay, i take it back, definitely chaos magic.
