Pretender can’t create life like Gold Experience, but it can imbue life to already living things when copying Gold Experience.
Dio would be really, really annoyed if he fought Joseph. Of course, most people are annoyed when they fight Joseph.

This new Joestar might not be related to the Jonathan by blood, but he has very certainly learned the art of being intensely irritating. Then again, the man he’d called his brother had always seemed the teacher type, becoming overly invested in everyone, no matter how deserving. He’d certainly teach tenacity to any child he might have, or might have adopted. Or perhaps he’s trying to live up to a legacy.
Likewise, no matter how cautious he’d been, he’d clearly not been cautious enough. He had underestimated a Joestar, yet again. Of course, again, it’s entirely possible this new Joestar isn’t working alone, either. Jonathan had been rather good at making friends, for someone who didn’t know how to adapt himself to the fools Dio had eating out of his hand. The new Joestar might be the same.
Once again, Dio finds himself picking himself out of ruins. At least this time, he hadn’t been impaled, and he’d had a bit longer to understand his powers. His vampiric reflexes were good enough he’d managed to dive back into the passageway before the explosion, so none of the actual explosion had hit him. Only the aftereffects were a problem, and even they weren’t what Dio had expected. It wasn’t like using dynamite. The damage wasn’t direct. It had the shockwave, sure, but it hadn’t completely collapsed the cavern, and it definitely hadn’t felt hot. This is just an educated guess, but it seems like the explosion consists of two parts, one that affects living things, or nominally living things, in Dio’s case, and one that is just the shockwave. If he’d been caught in the middle of it, perhaps it would’ve done enough damage, but as it is he’s already starting to heal.
As he glances into the cavern, it isn’t the pretty, pristine area Jonathan would have gotten excited about anymore. Perhaps it would have been a historical landmark, if historians had taken any account of this place. Maybe it was, but either way it wasn’t pristine anymore, with piles of rubble over the walkways and partly in the water.
At first, Dio doesn’t see any sort of movement. Even now, no one has come to check out the results, which is at least somewhat intelligent. They’re not overconfident in the ability of their traps to have destroyed him, but they’re testing his abilities as much as he’s testing theirs. And, perhaps, it’s simpler than that, because even just wounding him and making him weaker before the fight is probably considered a satisfactory outcome for them.
It’s too bad dragging along a human or two hadn’t been feasible, because he could use some sustenance to heal right now. Going back now is not a choice, not with the possibility of something sending him back. No matter, because he sees a splash and approaches cautiously when seeing the red begin to spread in the water. No outlines of lotuses lay in wait between himself and his chosen prey. If the stories of vampires had been accurate, the blood currently leaking into the water would be a problem, but as it is he feeds on pure life energy. He manages to stop a few seconds before he touches it, though, as he sees a golden light ripple across the fish’s scales as it wriggles and attempts to escape its watery prison. No—another trap?
Smashing the fish’s head with a rock causes it to bleed more, but after a slight spark it regresses to an egg, leaving behind the blood. The spark, however, dies, and after a moment Dio very carefully sticks his fingers into the egg. No Ripple. It’s not much sustenance, but it’s enough for his skin to close, at least.
Some of this is Hamon, clearly. Dio has become uncomfortably, intimately familiar with the technique, and he recognizes it, but some of this is clearly not Hamon. It’s something new, a new power. Probably one discovered by Jonathan, because if anyone can reach the pinnacle of humanity, it would have been him.
And his gaze picks out further traps in the darkness. While more advanced, he’s fairly certain that they are a perfected form of the landmines used during the American Civil War. They’re laid along the path, but he could walk through the water alongside it—or, rather, he could, if he wasn’t concerned the Hamon users would send Ripple through the water. Jonathan had already used it against Bruford, so water is dangerous. He has a defense against that, though, and what’s more it’s proven to work. He’s tested this before, against Jojo and that man called Zeppeli. A Hamon User cannot channel the Ripple through ice.
He takes off his boots and steps into the water, decreasing his body temperature to the point it freezes as soon as his foot touches. He freezes more and more of the water as he walks, gaining slight confidence as the ice spreads further.
“Enough tricks, Joestar,” he growls. It’s time he sees this imposter face-to-face.
“What, ‘do as I say and not as I do’, Dio?” The voice sounds close. It’s not echoing through this passageway, yet when Dio glances over at where it sounds like it’s coming from, no one is there. “Of course, hypocrisy is one of your main traits. Why are you even here, Brando? Are you curious about what happened to Jonathan, or do you just want to scrabble to survive like some animal?"
He’s throwing his voice, or using his power. Nothing is hurting Dio at the moment, though, so Dio’s leaning toward first explanation. It’d be harder, since he’d have to do it somehow without the echo, but he seems the type to have practiced.
“Don’t call me that,” Dio snarls.
“What, afraid you’ll turn into your father? You’re too late, Dio. Your father forsook humanity before you, and he didn’t even need a stone mask to do it.” Somewhere through the near-blind rage, the vampire notices that while the voice is mocking, a bitter, pained note is an undercurrent. He’s good at finding weaknesses, and the pain and rage he feels was easy enough for this Joestar to evoke because it’s such a familiar pain to Joestar, too. He knows exactly what to say, because he’s lived it. Not Jonathan’s son, then, or at least he has enough memories to remember a possibly alcoholic good-for-nothing, too.
He hears the sound of air moving and quickly heats up the water just in time. He falls down into the water just in time, because while he can’t see it, he can hear and feel a barrage of punches barely pass over his head.
