whoops
once again i opened a new tab post without posting, although i had the extra step of not having something prewritten and got distracted from actually doing so, so, uh, here. get late night ramblings about klavier. as usual warnings for kristoph and spoilers for apollo justice and dual destinies.
i find it fascinating, the courtroom klavier vs the musician klavier. because a lot of the perfectionism could definitely come from trying to live up to kristoph's impossibly set standards, but in that case, it would make sense that the issue affect courtroom klavier. yet it's with courtroom klavier that we see him the most relaxed/carefree. he's not like edgeworth, fighting years of hard-baked instincts to get the win in order to reach the truth. i would say there's definitely influence there, though--he doesn't respect a courtroom opponent automatically. it needs to be earned. when he first started facing apollo, he didn't respect him, leaving him behind at the crime scene. probably one thing that's definitely a leftover from his first trial. 'he's not worthy of your respect', and klavier still carries that baggage, probably especially for someone it looks like phoenix has taken under his wing. he expects the same shenanigans with forged evidence, but faced with (ha) evidence to the contrary, he stops judging apollo so harshly. (he still doesn't understand what's going on, and the stunt trucy pulled had him convinced, briefly, he'd been right--but apollo proved he cared about justice. funny enough.)
i assume part of it is that kristoph never cared for his music career, so he's always been on the defensive about it. desperate to prove himself, part of him knowing that kristoph will never care, never be proud of him about something he was so dismissive. i assume part of it is that kristoph only handed out compliments about the things he wanted to reinforce, like klavier's law career. it's a pretty common playbook for a sociopath or narcissist. i'd also say part of it is down to his time at themis, particularly with professor courte. and he's more self-aware than his brother (more self-aware than he'd probably like, himself, sometimes), so he probably gets that, if not the extent of it.
