unrelated to below rant: happy pi day!
i think the big issue with the "why can't guys be really close friends without SOMEONE AKA THIRSTY FANFIC WRITERS MISREADING IT" is that it super raises the bar. if a woman and a man were that close, people would definitely be shipping it, and unless it was, say, a brother and sister that would be fine and nobody would raise an
eyebrow. hell, if a man and a woman are in a scene together that can be enough. the argument only comes into play magically when the ship would be homosexual. which--to be fair, we do need more good examples of close male friendships that aren't problematized, but blame toxic masculinity that claims men aren't allowed to do certain things or be certain people and the fact that grasping at straws is most of what the non-straight community has in terms of actual representation, not people shipping things. in trying to sidestep toxic masculinity (which is a good thing, well done!), you have slid straight into homophobia, which is also not okay.
