Chapter Summary: Apollo needs to know Klavier's okay.  Follow-up to Guilty Love.

Word Count: 810
Rating: Teen
Note: Apollo Justice spoilers.  Kristoph doesn't appear in this fic; it's just his shadow looming over everything.
Warnings: Apollo asking about speculations about incest and Kristoph (and emotional abuse)

Before he can talk himself out of it, Apollo dials Klavier’s number, waiting and feeling vaguely restless and breathless like he’s calling his crush.
Maybe he is.  He can’t quite tell, not that it’s particularly relevant at the moment—a constricting feeling on his wrist.  Well, it’s true.  He has no intention of following through, not yet.  The pressure lets up a little.
“Was the incest thing personal?” he asks, the second the dial tone disappears, and the silence on the other end is deafening, particularly coming from the man who will fidget or hum under his breath even when they’re otherwise working quietly.
“Was—Herr Stirni?  Wie bitte?  Klavier sounds completely confused, and no wonder.  He’s accidentally started in the middle of the conversation in his approach to the truth.
“Sorry, right.  That comment about the ‘wrong kinds of love’.  Was it personal?”  If it was, Apollo might just have to turn into the demon that everyone thinks he is from his hair.
“A-ah.”  It takes a moment for the conversation to click, and Klavier still sounds hesitant and off-guard.  “Nein, danke.  Not that—”  He sighs, struggling to find the words, and that’s okay.  Apollo can be patient, especially about this.  “Perhaps, if he had not been so effective, Kris may have—but nein.  Even without, he had far too much control..”
“Why are you thanking me?”  That just seems a little weird.
“Because I appreciate you care enough to ask, even if it is in your usual blunt fashion.”  Klavier sounds amused, but fond.
“Sorry.”  Thinking back over the conversation, he did kind of overstep some boundaries, didn’t he?
But the prosecutor just waves it off.  “Don’t apologize, I enjoy it.  Well, other situations more, offensichtlich, but even so.  Your approach is a breath of fresh air.”  And he’s being completely sincere, even if there’s less to concentrate on in a phone call than in person.  “A client with an old tabloid, and you just couldn’t help yourself, seeing my handsome face?”
Maybe it’s hope, maybe it’s teasing to try to get him off the scent.  It’s hard to tell, with Klavier.  “More like, somehow I keep ending up surrounded by gossips.  At least you understand, having been on the receiving end way too much with the band thing.”  He assumes.  “They just won’t stop.  I don’t know how Mr. Wright has avoided being sued for slander.”
Klavier chuckles, and Apollo can pinpoint that as the exact second he relaxes, because now that he’s paying more attention to his bracelet, there it goes, taking a ‘breath’.  “He very well may have.  Herr Wright is a defense lawyer, after all, and more than capable of defending himself.  Defamation suits are difficult to prove at the best of times.”
Apollo thinks about asking how he knows that, whether Klavier himself prosecuted or if it was, in fact, something to do with his band, but instead states, quiet and earnest, “You know you can be completely honest with me, right?”
“Ja, I know you prefer it.”  Klavier sounds a little hurt.  “I assure you, I am not lying.”
“Oh, I know.  I just…I mean.”  Come on, Apollo, you’re a proven defense lawyer, you can find a little thing like a few words.  “Emotions aren’t a weakness.  So, uh, if you ever don’t feel like flashing that rock star smile at me, don’t.  I want you to be real, not just constantly happy.”
The prosecutor takes a deep breath.  Another.  “So, you’re offering yourself as a shoulder to cry on.”  It’s meant as a tease, a joke, but it comes out weak and all too serious.
“If you feel like that’s necessary.  Though I’d probably want privacy.  Neither of us need to embarrass ourselves in public, right?”  They do it all too often anyway.  And yet—
And yet, Klavier’s not disturbed by it in the least.  Though maybe that’s the wrong way of thinking about it.  Maybe that aura of ‘cool’, that rock star smile, are his shields, with hungry paparazzi always circling, searching for that sign of weakness.  And he has fun, riling Apollo up in court, maybe because he knows no matter how red Apollo gets, he can take it, and dish it out too.
“So thoughtful, you are.  Vielen Dank.”  A short, not altogether awkward silence follows his words, before there’s an intake of breath and what sounds like Klavier swearing quietly.  “Ach, much as I would like to stay and continue this delightful chat, I have an appointment.  Another time, ja?”
Under many—okay, most—circumstances, Apollo would assume Klavier’s just trying to get rid of him, but he can hear the man moving around his apartment and the sincerity in his voice.  “I’m holding you to that, Klavier.”
It’s nice to hear the laughter in the man’s voice as he murmurs, “Auf wiederhören,” and hangs up.
