Honestly, Pepper was utterly shocked that Tony didn’t drive a car.  He seemed the type to love cars, and he was extremely useful whenever her own car needed some sort of repairs.
Then again, they weren’t paid very well.  And given that he buys the occasional electronics and managed to cobble together his own rudimentary AI…sometimes she worries that if not for the occasional store sample he wouldn’t eat.  He does have a bike that he tried to fix, but it’s still a better fit for a garbage dump than his apartment.
She asks him about the latest thing he’s watching and listens to him babble happily with a smile, even as she worries more—she barely has time for anything when she’s off work.  Does he get enough sleep?
Maybe she should invite him over more and watch a few of these shows he really likes and pet him until he falls asleep.  It does sound interesting, even though it’s been a few years since she’d been able to do more than concentrate on work and school.
She waits until he’s safely ensconced in his territory so he’ll at least feel slightly safer before she asks.  “Who was that?”
Tony doesn’t bother to try to pretend he doesn’t know what she’s talking about.  “Don’t worry about it too much.  It’s my deal, you don’t need to get yourself involved…”
“Kitty, if you finish that sentence, no pets for a few months.”  Her eyes are hard, and her arms are crossed.
He shrinks back even further, making himself small.  “I don’t want you to get hurt for me, Pepp.”
He looks so miserable.  She wants to go and hug him, but like a cat, it’s better to give him his space.  But that doesn’t mean she can’t talk sense to him.
“Tony, we’re dating,” she states, and doesn’t miss it when he perks up (if he was transformed right now, she’d see his ears do the same thing), “…and yet you don’t want me involved in your life?  That’s not how this works.”
Tony fidgets before dropping his gaze to the desk lamp flickering on the ratty carpet, staring fixedly.  She’s a little worried about him breaking that couch by leaning on the arm, but he does like to perch places.  “Called himself Agent Carter from SHIELD, though I’m pretty sure that wasn’t his real name.”
That’s a bad sign.  She’s heard of them—everyone has.  They’ve been in the news—some sort of new government program to control superheroes, right?  “They haven’t figured out who you are, have they?”  She allows the concern but not the worry into her voice.  Her kitty’s already panicking.  No need to make it any worse.
“In one sense yes, but also no.”  He’s barely moving, like the smallest sound will make him run.  It was pretty similar to how he looked during the conversation, honestly.
“Kitty, you’re not making sense.”  He does that sometimes, assuming everyone’s following along, and he seriously needs to get her up to speed, because if Stray Cat is in trouble, Lady Luck is going to be there to help.
Her stray sighs and fidgets again, like he’s trying to find somewhere comfortable, only it’s his mind, not his body, that’s uncomfortable.
“I don’t think they saw through the glamour.  They didn’t mention anything about cats or superheroing.”  And yet he’s still panicking and—if it wasn’t about being a superhero, why would SHIELD talk to him?
She raises an eyebrow.  He’s not looking at her, so he doesn’t see, but the silence make him speak anyway.  This time, he’s really quiet, so she almost doesn’t hear him.  “They figured out I’m not Tony Carter.”
She can’t help the gasp, and his head jerks up to look at her with pleading kitten eyes.
“My name’s still Tony, and what you see is, really, what you get.  It’s just…”  His shoulders slump.  “Someone I trusted tried to have me killed.  I got the ring soon after, and Stray Cat escaped, but I went with a name close enough to my own because I’m not a spy no matter how much Bond I watch and I can’t just learn to answer to a different name naturally.  I’ve tried to stay under the radar, use the glamour to my advantage, but it apparently didn’t work as well as I hoped.”  He stands slowly and starts making his way over to her, metaphorical tail between his legs, and she opens her arms wide ready for a hug.  He hides his head in her shoulder.
“I’m along for the ride, whatever happens.  No one messes with my kitty,” she reassures him, running her fingers through his hair and feeling the tension leech out of his body.
“Tony Stark,” he mutters into her shoulder, and if he wasn’t in her arms, she wouldn’t have heard him.
She stills instantly, not sure she heard him right.
“Obie was dealing under the table, and I was going to ask him about it and he tried to have me killed on the plane.”
She’d heard about that.  Everyone had.  Not the true story, obviously, but Tony Stark’s disappearance was one time the newspapers had loved the billionaire playboy as much as the tabloids did—and, of course, Obidiah Stane’s heartfelt promise to find Howard’s son.
Virginia “Pepper” Potts allows herself two—no, three—seconds to panic about her boyfriend being a celebrity before she ruthlessly shuts it down, because Tony’s clearly on the verge of a nervous breakdown going by the babbling he’s evidently been doing while she’s been processing.
“…and I never wanted you to find out because you’re so perfect and you’re probably heard the stories and Pepp, they weren’t exaggerating; I am a mess—”
“Was,” she corrects, bopping him on the nose and watching him briefly turn cross-eyed.  “I don’t care about all of that because you were a dumb kid.  You know who I do care about, Tony?  My awkward coworker at work.  My dorky kitty who makes me smile.  You might have been a stray, but with me, you have a home.”
He blinks, slow and confused and affectionate, and then butts her hand with his head, not even trying to conceal the pleased rumble coming from his throat.
“And we’ll figure out what to do about SHIELD together,” she adds, and while the purring stops she doesn’t miss the shy, relieved smile.
