Giles' Detective Agency: [Prologue]

I don't have the next rec done yet, so I might end up having a few more fanfic postings in the next couple days (throwing off my schedule, mah!)
...also, Sunnydale Herald, I love you, but I lost it when it said Angel appeared last chapter, considering, well...uhm. Events in the first couple chapters of the volume. Man, that's dark humour.
This particular entry was written aaaaaages ago so it fits the (blast from the past) warning label (i.e. this was written years ago and is only just now being posted), though I did touch up a few things (mostly because things changed and suddenly continuity didn't exist anymore). I did change things a bit; Xander's no longer as solemn as he'd been in the beginning (mostly because I didn't want any Ninja Theories in this establishment and the complete brooding wasn't interesting to write [or, I should imagine, to read]). Events in a certain chapter got a whole lot darker, which I'll probably touch on along with warnings during that chapter. Xander's powers ended up changing from initial imaginings. I'll probably touch on that later, too. There's some weird noir-ish looking out for Number One, even if they're a family (well, once they get to that point).
I'll keep the title, but call it a prologue, since I'm not entirely sure what I was thinking as the aforementioned detective agency is Sir Not Appearing in This Fic.
Oh, and while I'm at it, I'll mention that my previously posted story Echoes of Our Hearts has a Xander from around this fic, even if weird Glory rebooted world shenanigans got involved.

Chapter Summary: Giles reflects on how he got to this point (spoiler alert: he doesn't have any better clue than anyone else).
Word Count: 418
Rating: Gen
Giles hadn’t planned on becoming a father for three young kids, all more or less on their own and two, at the very least, on the run from something or someone. It didn’t help that two of them had powers, and while he’d been training all his life to deal with a Slayer, no amount of manual or training could prepare him for Buffy. As for the other…
He glanced up, surreptitiously eyeing Xander, who was more than a little odd. Not that he didn’t have reason to be, and Giles completely understood. That didn’t mean that the ex-Watcher was completely comfortable with the young man. Training had taught him that demons were evil, not to be trusted, that even the slightest tint of demon blood would render one an irredeemable monster. He was quickly learning to distrust his training, given the massive betrayal the Watcher’s Council was apparently capable of, having sent assassin squads for him and Buffy, but that didn’t mean that he could easily shrug it off, either. And there was also the problem of safety. He and Buffy were in hiding, and if the young man and his friend (who, Ripper could sense, had a lot of raw power to be tapped, should she start down the path of the witch) placed the two in danger, they were on their own. A mere matter of survival.
What was sufficiently disturbing was that Xander completely understood and respected him for his willingness to throw him to the dogs, even the fact that he might have done so before now if not for the boy’s ability to hide them all from the prying eyes of the Council despite his activities. The boy was hurt in more ways than just the physical, but they had yet to see whether the broken could be mended. The Englishman was wary of teaching anyone to master demonic power, but he was quickly beginning to see that if he didn’t do so, Xander would continue to see himself as a monster, to repress and further break, or to lean further and further upon the cursed sword. Too often the boy was dangerous, cynical, withdrawn, but every now and then the goofy smile would appear and the boy would reference something that Giles had never heard of or appear to actually enjoy life, showing compassion and a loyalty that staggered the imagination. There wasn’t anything Xander wouldn’t do for his friends, and that kind of purity was far too uncommon. Worth nurturing.
