Jim appreciates being on a first-name basis with his officers (even Uhura, finally, even though she has yet to give him hers) when they’re off-duty and even sometimes when they’re on. He likes the relaxed atmosphere that makes it feel like family, and he’s even starting to get over the urge to run, the feeling that something so happy, so pure, is going to sour in a heartbeat or be torn from him.
It helps that Spock is beginning to follow his girlfriend’s lead and snark at him in his own Vulcan way. That Chekov despite the fact that he’s a genius is also younger, forcing him into the elder brother role he plays so well despite the fact that he wasn’t born into it, and he can act the hero and not feel like a fraud. That Sulu’s an absolute weirdo with a sneaky, wicked sense of humor and a hard-on for plants (and one day, if this Benjamin guy he keeps sending stargrams to breaks his heart, Jim will do his absolute best to break Benjamin and then find Hikaru a plant girlfriend, or boyfriend, or whatever, because surely there has to be a sentient plant species somewhere in the galaxy; it’s a huge place). That M’Benga likes embarrassing people, but only in ways that it takes him a while to realize are actually therapeutic, forcing them to confront their own issues, or whatever. That Scotty has the biggest crush on the Enterprise (which is a little weird but honestly she’s also a beautiful lady so what’s not to love? Except that making it sexual might be taking it a bit far when she can’t reciprocate) and also maybe Keenser (he’s never going to get the full story on their relationship, and isn’t entirely sure he wants to unless Scotty supplies all the alcohol, which with how protective he gets of his scotch isn’t anything approximating likely), and is a bit crazy in the best way when it comes to taking care of his Engineering department. Even Cupcake’s beginning to come around (mostly in the ‘I’m the only one that gets to punch his face’ department), but he’s pretty sure the fact that they both insult and threaten each other but don’t really act on that anymore is a good sign.
Point is, they’re all a little broken, meaning that this isn’t a paradise, meaning it won’t turn around to bite him in the butt. That doesn’t mean he doesn’t appreciate knowing what’s going on every now and then.
So when Scotty marches up to him when he’s helping take care of the little food garden he, Sulu, and the cooks had installed on the Enterprise, a frown on, and starts off with an angry Captain and continues babbling at a mile a minute, he’s confused and a little annoyed. He can’t remember anything in the reports or rumors around the ship or actual conversations or even in the briefing meetings that would give him any idea of what Scotty’s talking about, and it’s a problem because that means neither of them are doing their jobs. It’s his job to know what’s happening on his ship, and Scotty’s to make sure he’s kept up to date, especially if there’s something urgent. Scotty’s definitely overexcited about this, though, because not only is he speaking fast, his accent’s also thickened. If given time and a little slower dialogue, he could figure out what the man’s saying, but as it is…maybe he should watch old vids so he can keep up next time.
“What?” he asks when he can get a word in edgewise.
“The report about the phaser couplings. Keenser was s’pposed to file it with you. Don’t tell me you didn’t read the message—oh!” And then Scotty dashes off again.
He turns to Sulu, utterly confused and not a little upset. “I’m the captain, don’t I deserve to know what’s happening on this ship?”
Hikaru hides a smile as he crouches to examine another plant’s leaves. “I think we’re all better off not knowing everything about Scotty or what he’s up to, Captain.”
Jim sighs, but smiles wryly. “You’re probably right.” He switches topics, tries to bury the memory of what just happened because it’ll bug him if he doesn’t and he can always unearth it later if it becomes relevant. “So, how’s the hydroponics treating our garden?”
