idle thought #556
Apr. 24th, 2024 09:11 pmI don’t think player sexuality is always a bad thing (re: Verily Bitchie; though I think they make this point at the end of their video), but it has to a) be in the kind of RPGs where you have really detailed character creation and are essentially making your own RPG character b) have the options to be bi or gay or any other sexuality not be hidden but kind of in your face options c) have really obvious examples in the world. Like, obviously write all that in so it’s not obviously the writer talking to the player, but still, make it obvious that this isn’t a space for homophobes. In games where you already have a defined character, make it obvious, and even when you’re deciding not to go down certain romance routes make it more like real life where you’re deciding whether you want to date someone, not whether or not you’re attracted to them. Like, attraction and dating aren’t the same thing, any more than attraction and sex is, or acespec people would literally not exist. (Not saying that Verity and Ada made this mistake, either. But a lot of game writers do.)
