“Don’t you dare,” Xander warns warily, not moving a muscle, with the obvious caveat that he doesn’t think for a second Shaun will actually listen.
Wolf-Shaun narrows his eyes, as if he’s thinking about it, and doesn’t actually bite down or break the skin, just holds the arm in his jaws for a few more seconds as if to reassure himself who’s in charge before reluctantly letting go. Just in time, too, or the pothole they pass over could have taken the decision away.
“What.” Xander doesn’t move for another few seconds, like he doesn’t quite believe he made it through that one unscathed, then carefully reaches out a bandaged arm, scratching behind Wolf-Shaun’s ear like he expects to be bitten for his presumption.
Wolf-Shaun, on the other hand, apparently enjoys that like a normal dog, leaning into the hand and relaxing all at once.
“This isn’t normal, is it?” Rebecca asks, just to be sure, though from Xander’s reaction she’s pretty positive it isn’t.
He shakes his head, watching Wolf-Shaun carefully even as the big red wolf leans further and further into the pet. “I wasn’t kidding about the warning. Freshly turned weres are usually the least intelligent they’ll ever be. Couple that with the fact that turning is a pain, but at least on most other occasions it’s over quickly, and you’ve got a recipe for disaster.” Almost as an afterthought, he adds, “...Also, most of the species I know don’t actually go full wolf. It’s usually more of a hybrid. Y’know, like the name would suggest.”
Rebecca dares to reach out—oh, nice, that fur is soft—freezing a little as Wolf-Shaun opens one eye, thinks about it, then closes it again.
