         “Those aren’t my people,” Xander shrugs casually, like this doesn’t mean anything to him, though from the way he’s crowding in and watching with interest he does, actually, intensely.
         He sounds so detached that good Samaritan or no, Desmond would be tempted to call him a sociopath if not for the point where one of the Assassins gets shot and he closes his eye in recognition and sorrow. It’s quick, but he does care.
         “How can you be sure?” Desmond asks, just to be sure, and Xander grins at him goofily, something slightly hard and furious hiding in his eye. He wants revenge for people he doesn’t even know—which fits with him throwing himself into the middle of a war he had no stake in.
         “Not enough women, not enough medieval hardware. They’re for you, probably.” He sounds like he’s joking, but he’s serious.
