Maybe you could read the importance of relationships to Buffy as a deconstruction of the way women construct their identities in relation to how men define them.    The Watchers are coded almost exclusively as a male organization, and in rebellion against that Buffy thinks of her personality mostly in terms of who she’s dating, which is entirely how modern society operates but it’s kind of messed up too.
