I think those are supposed to be thoughts, except this whole thing is narrated by your thoughts, and you have nothing to distinguish it from your quotation marks dialogue.

Pretty sure he’s a maybe-not-human Bobby.  Your desire to not tick him off is wise.

I never finished this book.  I might go back to it someday.  If you've read it and love it, let me know!  I find the worldbuilding really interesting but some of the personal character writing choices disquieted me and it's been long enough I don't have direct examples.
