“He was cheating.”
Holly crouches down to try to look her boy straight in the eye, but Kujo-kun twists away to look away.
“Were you cheating?” she asks, and he mumbles his reply.
“No, Mom.” He doesn’t want to meet her eyes, which indicates he’s probably not being truthful.
Holly straightens up, and the teacher is about to protest that young children are not always the most truthful, when Holly fixes her with a stern stare so unlike the cheerful, energetic parent Hiyama has always seen before. “Let him write a different essay in front of you. Would that satisfy your doubts?”
It’s an odd feeling as she and the child protest at the same time, but Holly only addresses her son’s doubts, voice softening as she speaks to him.
“How about one about airplanes or ships? I know you don’t like an audience, but you can write about that, can’t you?”
He perks up, and she suddenly starts to think she’s misunderstood the situation, particularly when he starts scribbling one down very quickly. She can’t verify the facts within, but just glancing at the way he writes, it’s very different from the way he talks, where he barely speaks.
