Death/injury count: Spock just got shot!  Kirk, poisoned, dying, then under a spell and essentially given a date rape drug.  Nona, stabbed to death.  Bones, shot in the arm.

New plants = possible new drugs (esp medical—good science!)

M’Benga and Bones working together perfectly normally.  Though I suspect working in the Transporter Room isn’t particularly normal for them.

Bones just reads exactly why Jim’s just glaring.

This is, what, the first time he’s actually violating orders?  Not questioning them, not playing within the rules, actually violating them.  (go back and check?)

ACCURATE DEPICTION OF SHOCK

Okay, I don’t enjoy the depiction of women as witches or temptresses.  (I do think it’s interesting that they’re showing Tyree not giving his consent even as the spell/drug works though)

And even in the future they don’t fix everything

At least it comes in a show where there are a variety of depictions of women.

Here comes the section I started earlier so I could see M’Benga.  (and his sense of humor.)

Poor Bones looks traumatized by the primitive shamanism healing.

That’s slightly creepy.

Aww.  His first assumption anytime he’s been healed was “thanks bones”?  Take notes, JJAbrams (& mostly Into Darkness team)

Her knowing grin says no, especially with the whole phaser thing.  She desires power.

Bones wakes up, first instinct—check on Jim.

(also, again, creepy, although it’s adorable Jim’s just like friend!!!  Bones, introduce!!!  Explain knowledge!!! Sometimes he’s such a puppy)

She’s actually a lot like Rasputin.  Only cares about power, probably.

“I am grateful.” (that sounds an awful lot like “I saved your life now you’re obligated to have sex with me” crrreeeepy)

“This man believes in the same thing we do, that killing is stupid and useless.” –Bones (but probably violence is still okay, just not killing, at least in the non-medical areas)

“People’s exhibit number two” okay, anyone who can make courtroom jokes is awesome.

This is essentially the colonialist dialogue.

Maybe it is just a superstition.  Maybe there is no right answer.  (I like, though, that Jim’s aware of the superstition and is actively looking for symptoms, just in case—she wants superior firearms, that’s not right, the fact that I still think that means I’m probably still normal)

(why don’t you just have stun-only phasers?  Those would be fine, right?  Or teach them to shoot to hurt not kill?)

Some episodes just don’t leave you feeling good about them.  Some episodes the heroes don’t win.  That’s probably too nuanced for Abrams (or, truth be told, a lot of other watchers).
