The movement of a pawn. “I suppose it’s all one big conspiracy,” a voice states dryly.
The knight takes the pawn. “Now, Kaiba, what would make you say that? You’re getting paranoid.”
The young CEO stares at the board with a glare worthy of a general.
“Being acquainted with Yugi and the rest of the idiots will do that to you,” he agrees. “But I’m a young CEO in what happens to be an oddly cutthroat field. You’re the only one I can even vaguely tolerate, let alone, to a certain extent, trust. I believe you to be intelligent, self-motivated, willing to take risks.”
The British man shakes his head. “That’s my queen,” he corrects, and that’s one bishop gone forever.
Good riddance. People needed to stop bringing in destiny and miracles and actually act to bring them about. “You may seem all gentlemanly, but that’s hardly the whole. I just don’t bother.”
Edgeworth snorts politely, leaning back in the chair and sipping the tea. “No, I doubt anyone would accuse you of that.” He sighs. “Unfortunately, Wright has the same talent to attract the ridiculous. And it is our rivals who shape us, save us, hone our skills. And—if we’re unlucky—drag us down with them. We’re caught in this fight to the bitter end.”
Kaiba makes an irritated sound in the back of his throat. Perhaps, like Duel Monsters, this is yet another mind game—yet the two are one and the same, manipulative yet brutally honest. Unapologetic for who they are or how they’ve gotten here, for here is a good place to be. “I’d walk away. They’ve certainly caused me enough trouble. But…wouldn’t that be weak?”
It’s a question with no answer, not that Kaiba expects one. He needs to bring his best game, now.
