“Narukami.” It’s Yosuke, standing up and casually strolling over. He looks troubled, but given that a fellow Magician is the suspect, that’s not so surprising.
“Hanamura.” He appreciates that the brunet waited, since tensions are high and the last thing he needs is discrimination against one of his best people. The kid can be discreet when he feels like it.
He opens a private channel with a decent level of encryption and starts right in once most of the room has shuffled out, arms crossed, frown firmly in place. I don’t think our culprit is a Magician.
Narukami blinks several times. You saw the evidence.
The Magician nods, tapping his foot along to whatever soundtrack he’s probably projecting. A few moments of silence, then I’m not convinced. He shakes his head at Narukami’s confused look and breathes deeply. No, hear me out here. I was watching the footage, and it’s hard to tell from here, but…there’s something…off about his rewrites. Those are definitely the powers of a Magician, but…I dunno. It’s like there’s a hardware/software incompatibility or something.
Well, that’s a surprise. He’s learning new things about Magicians all the time, now. Isn’t…that impossible? Aren’t Magicians Magicians because they are compatible with the associated software?
Exactly my point. At the continued blank stare, Yosuke sighs. The point is, if he was a Magician, there wouldn’t be any mistakes caused by a slight software incompatibility. It’s not the biggest obstacle for this guy—he’s still managing to rewrite, despite his limitation—but it still exists. My money’s on a Sorceror or a Hacker.
It sounds like he’s actually thought this through, and Yuu has faith that his resident Magician will get to the point sooner or letter. Patience pays off.
I don’t know how he would get his hands on the tech, but he did, I’m almost sure. He’s too reckless with it.
What difference does that make? Maybe there’s someone even more cautious than you. It’s entirely probable. In everything else, Yosuke’s reckless, but when it comes to his Magician powers he doesn’t like to use them often.
Yosuke sighs. Okay, I’m going to try to explain how Magicians work. When you’re a kid, you find out you have this amazing power. Actually, you probably get the software upgrade first, once they find you’re compatible, but I don’t really remember that. Anyways, you’re thoughtless at first. You try to download all the answers for a test, or decide you need to be skinnier. You’re bound to make a mistake eventually. Some sort of paradox—which, by the way, is theorized to maybe destroy the world or something—will occur, or something will have unintended side effects. And you’re a cocky brat, so you don’t create a backup or even attempt to sandbox it. So when you realize, you frantically try to fix it. You usually can’t undo your rewrite, but the Magician teaching you can rewrite it so it looks good as new. And you realize that yeah, you could abuse your power, but it’s a lot of work, so using your power all over the place isn’t really a solution. He sighs. I can’t be certain, but I’m pretty sure this guy didn’t even use a backup. He’s too reckless. It’s not even a matter of being responsible. It’s a matter of covering your own ass. This guy has what feels like a software incompatibility and is a little too rash. He pauses for a long time, thoughtful, before he continues. It’s like this. Sorcerors and Hackers work with the program or maybe command prompt, right? They can tell the computer to do things that will totally wreck it, but they work within the confines of the OS and the select number of commands the interface will recognize.
Narukami nods.
Magicians bypass all that. They root around in the OS or Registry itself. Even when you totally understand everything and have done it a hundred times before, you still make a backup, because one typo or something could totally wreck your computer. Only the stakes are a lot bigger when the computer is the world. You can’t just buy a new one because you’ll probably just cease to exist. Yosuke threads his fingers through his hair nervously. Because of all that, we like to keep track of all Magicians. If one had gone rogue we go in for a takedown. And we like to notify everyone. Because that’s the flip side. Any rogue knows that the rest of us are keeping an eye out, and we’re the only ones that could stop them. They’ll be a god without us. So they usually like to go on the offensive too. He winks, flashing a grin that makes Narukami’s heart skip—but it’s not entirely pleasant, because that particular grin says that he’s going to do something stupid and reckless. They’d never take me off the team because they want someone who can neutralize the threat. On the plus side, if it is a Magician and I’m wrong about all this, we’ll know soon enough because I’ll draw heavy fire.
I’m not comfortable with you acting as bait, Yuu growls, realizing that he sounds almost exactly like Dojima.
He earns a shrug in return. Not sure you have a choice, Captain.
