Chapter Summary: Anzu gets a lecture from a very unimpressed 'big bro'.
Word Count: 415
Rating: teen
Anzu nearly screams when she wakes up and sees a looming figure, only to realize that she’s only familiar with one person taller than Jounouchi.
Who currently has his arms crossed and that typical “why do I even waste my time with you?” cold stare.
“I didn’t imagine you to be a coward,” he states bluntly, and it takes her a moment of surprise to realize that she’s managed to disappoint him. An odd thought, considering that she’s certain he rarely expects the majority of people to do or be anything special. It’s probably easier to impress him.
She’s also had to deal with him about as much as Yugi and Yugi’s stage persona, so she realizes his first instinct would have been to order her into car so she couldn’t escape this little talk.
Maybe it’s an imposition, having him just show up in her house uninvited, but it’s a courtesy she’s willing to bet would extend to few others.
“Where’s your entourage?” The question’s hostile, and he grimaces.
“They’re outside. I figured you’d be more comfortable that way.”
“You just figured I’d be more likely to listen to you,” she accuses, and he shrugs like this isn’t all some big revelation.
“What can I say; I like results.”
He looks away and acts like he’s talking to the air. Just thinking out loud. “Yugi’s been distracted. You may not think I have a heart. Just call it self-interest if you like. But Yugi cares. He likes you. You have a backbone and don’t appear to have an agenda, given my extensive research. If he had to choose someone, you’re not a bad choice—for a friend or something more. None of us make friends easily, and what you’ve inadvertently done…”
“It’s not stupid to protect yourself!” she yells. It’s the most alive she’s felt in days, sitting here, arguing with Kaiba.
“No,” he disagrees. “…it’s stupid not to take precautions. And if you really feel you need this protection, I can’t stop you. But with every move you make, you should be aware of what you sacrifice. We all do what we have to, to survive. Just be aware that you’re leaving a broken Yugi in your wake.”
Anzu growls. It’s weird, but then, she’s angry. “So, what, you were just hoping to marry him off?”
He shakes his head as he stands and heads for the door. “No. That was Mokuba,” he mutters. She’s fairly certain she wasn’t meant to hear that.
