Trucy appoints herself on the Comeback Planning Committee. Phoenix had argued with her for ten hours straight and made no headway; she finally ended the ‘discussion’ by rolling her eyes and pointing out, “Really, Daddy, this is the safest thing I could be doing, considering the sooner we get out of hiding the better it is for my childhood, and don’t worry I’ll stay with Uncle Edgey and Uncle Larry while you go out there and do the dangerous stuff.”
Between the three of them, Trucy will probably be the only one to make it out with her sanity intact, but she’ll at least get some vaguely balanced parenting out of the deal. So in the planning she was.
“Remember what Daddy always says,” she speaks up, and Larry looks confused.
“This’ll be the card I need to turn this duel around?” he asks, scrunching up his nose, and Trucy laughs before turning solemn.
“No, I mean—Other Daddy.” It’s quiet, but she hurries on, not wanting to damage the mood further. “You don’t know a person’s heart until you duel them.”
“You can’t just waltz into Duel Academy and challenge a boy to a duel without Kristoph noticing,” Miles protests, but Phoenix shakes his head.
“If rumors are right, I won’t have to. Apparently a lot of people have been getting on the island without anyone noticing. Ordinarily, I’d worry about security and murder, but I’m not going to complain when it works in my favor. And apparently Justice likes to go off into the forest to think.” He smiles at her. “Thanks, sweetie, this just might work.”
“Wright,” Miles warns, and her daddy waves the concerns off.
“Remember, I’ve pulled off a lot more before with a lot less.”
“That’s the mark of a good magician,” Trucy points out, beaming, “…making the crazy and the impossible a reality.”
