               “Come on, Yuge!  We gotta—”
Yugi’s step falters as he feels something like a Shadow Game, only it’s on a vaster scale than he can remember.  From the way his friends pause, too, he guesses that everyone can see the dark thunderclouds creeping over the city like an oil, poisoning the waters.
He’s the only one that slams into what feels like an invisible brick wall, though.
He tumbles back, chains digging painfully into his body.  They might look cool, but they hurt.
It takes Joey a moment to realize he’s fallen behind.  It’s a relief when he realizes he can at least hear voices from inside the barrier.
“Yo, Yuge, do you want me to carry—” Joey glances back and his eyes widen as he starts running back.  The others do, too.  “You okay?”
Yugi stands slowly, trying to smile, but he hurts and every sense is screaming that there’s something wrong.  “Yeah, I guess, but…”
He puts out a hand and there’s no mistaking it—there’s a barrier of some kind, solid to his touch.  But not anyone else’s, apparently.
He looks up, really looks up, and gasps.  They’re faint, but he can see them—giant hulking creatures the size of Obelisk standing around the city.
“Uh, Yugi?  You wanna explain the mime routine?” Tristan asks, and the King of Games shakes his head, being brought back to the present.
“I can’t get through,” he explains, a shiver running through him.  This definitely feels like a massive Shadow Game, and he’s feeling the dread he hasn’t felt since he first watched that videotape Pegasus sent…
“Grandpa’s in there!” he screams and focuses all his will as he pulls back his hand to punch the barrier.  I’m the new Pharaoh, so get out of my way!
Wait, buddy—” Joey begins, arriving at about where he’s standing and examining the seemingly empty space between them, looking troubled.
“Hrrrah!” he feels his fist hit the wall, solid as ever, and then for a second it feels like his hand has begun sinking in.  Then, as swiftly as a striking Blue Eyes, he feels every nerve from his hand up through his arm and to the rest of his body set ablaze.  Somehow, it’s agony worse than he’s ever felt, and his vision whites out completely, until his whole world is white torment.
Eventually, he realizes that the pain’s been lessening slightly, and there’s someone holding his hand.  There’s also someone supporting him, and a bunch of voices pleading for him to be okay, but he can’t hear them above the keening wail.  It’s loud and annoying.  It’s not really necessary.  He’s almost sure he’s not dying.
It takes a minute, but he opens his eyes.  The light’s like a stabbing pain, but it’s almost welcoming, something to focus on besides the encroaching white.  He blinks until his gaze focuses on a familiar mop of blond hair and the worried, beautiful face behind him.  He tries to say a name, and what comes out is an unintelligible hoarse moan.  At least the screaming stopped—W-wait, that was me.
He’s still curled up like he’s in pain, though.  He tries to straighten out, and the reflexive pain that shoots up his legs and back nearly paralyzes him again, but he grits his teeth and tries again anyway.  “What happened?” he asks, voice nearly gone.
“You tell us,” Tristan states in a no-nonsense tone.  “One minute you were pawing at the air like there’s some kinda invisible wall, and the next the Brainiac here’s tackling you and you’re screaming bloody murder.”
Joey shrugs.  “You tried to get through, whateva it was, and den you started screaming an’ it looked like you were getting sucked in or something.”
Téa’s cool hand is on his forehead, which feels nice, and he’s feeling brave enough to take a look back at whatever seems familiar about Joey and Tristan’s words.  He remembers feeling desperation, because... “Grandpa!” he cries and sits up.
The world spins, and Téa pushes him back down with a strength he didn’t know she possessed.  She’s still really quiet, which means he really, really scared her.  “Nuh-uh,” Joey states flatly, agreeing with Téa.  “We ain’t doin’ that again until we know it won’t half kill ya.”
Yugi reluctantly allows himself to be guided, gently but insistently, back down.  He closes his eyes and thinks.
Being sucked in.  Or rather, not all of him.  Like it was draining him of part of himself, randomly slashing his psyche open until it had the pieces it wanted and discarding the ones it didn’t.  Echoes of whispers, Essence of the New Pharaoh, unpleasantly burrowing into his brain.
“You’re right, there’s some sort of magical barrier around the city.  I can just make out its guardians.”  He pauses, then, “Joey, Tristan, can you please make sure Grandpa’s okay?”
Tristan nods.  “Not gonna try and get rid of your girlfriend?” he asks as Joey carefully hands him off to Téa instead.
If he tought he could stand, he’d bristle as his friends treat him like a fragile cup or something, but he bites down his dignity on this one.
“She wouldn’t go.  I’d just end up looking stupid,” he manages, feeling his eyelids droop.  Now he’s exhausted.
“You got that right,” Téa mutters, settling him on her lap.  “You two go on!  We’re rooting for you!”
Tristan salutes, and Joey gives a thumbs-up as they tentatively step through the area of space Yugi had had so much trouble with.  When it’s obvious they’ve made it through in one piece, they break into a run on the other side.
