Chapter Summary: Avon and Blake discuss their situation.

Word Count: 1031
Rating: Teen

Avon is the first to know Blake has recovered. Of course he is, under the circumstances, when he can feel without even being present the man’s shift from unconsciousness to wakefulness. He feels Blake waken, try to work out what had happened, and then experience the first stirrings of panic. Avon himself grits his teeth, gives up on repairs for the time being, and finds as comfortable a position as he can manage to wait out the interim. He listens with fascination as Blake attempts to rally, then, finding the effort futile, settles on devastating honesty. It is really quite unfair how much more he finds himself trusting the other man now that he knows (for the time being, at least) it is impossible for Blake to lie to him, or withhold vital data in his own thought process.
“I am sorry to make you such a poor match.” Disgustingly, he reads as nothing but sincere.
It is just like you with your own inflated ego to feel any amount of responsibility for the vagaries of the universe.” There are a good number of apologies Avon would like to have from Blake. This is none of them. A line of thought which takes Blake completely by surprise, and Avon’s smile is sharp with satisfaction. While not what he wishes, it allows him to regain some small amount of dignity, wrest some small control back over the situation. “Rather than anything you actually have any measure of say in the matter, such as your own actions. How often you insist on looking out for our health while completely neglecting your own. It isn’t merely for your own benefit that we care, Blake. When you accompany us, it is with the assumption that you will be able to watch our back effectively, not pass out at a crucial moment.”
Somehow, fascinatingly, it seems this is an entire line of thought that had managed to evade the calculations of their fearless leader. “Point taken,” Blake agrees after a moment, considerably more dignified in the failed spar than would be expected. “I will endeavor to do better in the future.”
See that you do.” He does seem sincere, but Avon finds it difficult to trust such a promise. Such is not entirely his own past history. He has gained an additional context in that Blake does not always lie or try to manipulate them; on occasion it is Blake’s own memory failing him, but he would rather suffer accusations of being a tyrant (however well he had taken that particular taunt) than disclose such either to them or himself.
Obviously that is a state of affairs that can’t continue,” Avon adds. “I prefer to work with facts rather than suppositions and enjoy even less working utterly in the dark.”
Blake, Avon finds, is far more tentative when it comes to personal matters than his take-charge rebel persona would have the rest of the universe believe. This may have to do with Avon’s new insight discovering that the man’s confidence is at least partly a carefully constructed persona. Not, indeed, entirely fictitious, shining through largely whenever the man works himself up into a good and hearty speech. In return, he can tell (slightly irritating, but there’s no use in trying to hide this now) that Avon isn’t entirely displeased with the notion of a connection between them, and is having a few difficulties reconciling that with his own image of Avon, a model that, Avon finds to his own surprise, is both more and less generous than others would create. “I...don’t wish to play favorites.” It is seemingly as true as anything else Blake has said, or thought rather.
Under the circumstances, I believe they would understand.” If Blake wishes to use their Link as an excuse, Avon surely shan’t complain. “In any case, I like not to waste time trying to change the facts of the universe.”
This manages to amuse Blake. “Avon, it might have escaped your attention, but that comprises a good majority of what I do.”
Which in large part is why I find you so foolish.” All the more infuriating because Blake is capable of not being foolish. He chooses to be.
Blake relaxes slightly. Part of his disbelief has nothing to do with Avon himself, but with Blake’s own reluctance to accept anything he might care about. It’s his own fear of losing anything else. “You’re being uncommonly generous about this.”
You will find it aids in my estimation of yourself considerably when I am certain you would not betray me.” Not that he’d had any damning information to share in the first place; they’d both been far more cautious in the past, and of course it only took a single mistake for them both to end up where they were now. “And, of course, the likelihood that you will at least be more likely to consider my contributions than reject them out of hand.”
I don’t—” Blake starts. The words die as he thinks them. It’s not a lie, per se; he does at least attempt to give them some thought, but it’s not the truth either, which becomes abundantly clear to them both. It’s not as if he’ll be able to forget or rush into things now, not with their Link re-established. “But you will try to use this to your advantage?” That he finds believable.
Of course. I’m surprised you would ever doubt it.” He can feel himself smiling now. “And, hopefully, your own, if I can share even a modicum of my sense of self-preservation.” As much as Blake would like to continue to verbally spar, Avon can feel him fading. “Get Gan to re-check your temperature. The rest can wait.”
Thank you’, Avon finds, is as pleasant a way of receiving an apology as any, particularly from a man so proud as to render any other method impossible, and the situation is also much more tolerable when he finds it’s mutual. If anything Blake is more affected than he. Jenna being right on this occasion is a little more annoying, but not enough to render the situation as unbearable as Avon would have supposed.
