Buffy’s tired. You fight a master vampire and burn down a gymnasium, and you honestly could sleep for the next ten years. She stumbles into her room, debates for a moment or two whether she wants to actually change her clothes and/or take a shower, and finally notices the blood on her clothes. If she doesn’t want to get the blood on her sheets, she really has to get changed.
She starts, gingerly, to peel off the shirt, when there’s an uncomfortable throat-clearing. Startled, a rabbit before a snake, she freezes, only her head moving as she looks up, and that, there…
Her father’s sitting there, just as silent as ever, staring at her. She would never have known the eyes were startled if she didn’t know him as well as anybody ever would. She knows he cares, but…
But it’s not enough to keep him here. It’s not enough to stop him from leaving when we need him. I almost wish he was like the normal dads and I could tell all the people at school that he ran off with his secretary.
Eventually, he shakes his head once. “Shirt off.”
Buffy actually steps back. “Jotaro, if you’re…”
“Don’t be stupid,” he actually growls back. “If you’re wounded, we need to treat the wound. It’s not like I’m asking you to take off your bra.” Hesitation, realization goes through his green eyes. “Please tell me you’re wearing one.”
Her lips move into a snarl. Her dad always brings out the worst in her. “Oh, don’t worry, you won’t see anything you don’t want to see.”
“Jolyne—” Yeah, that’s definitely frustration.
“I told you, my name is Buffy. Or is that too hard for you to say?”
“Enough.” He stands, and his full height, well, it’s a little intimidating. Buffy will deny that squeak to Kingdom Come, though. “Yare yare, now I feel like the old man.”
She bites her lips. She’s never really been scared of him before, but she almost feels scared of him now.
“Do you want your mother to see the blood?” he asks. He leaves the room briefly, after yet another glance, like he’s making sure she’s not going to disappear the minute he takes his eyes off her. He comes back shortly (he’s a lot quicker and quieter than he looks) with what looks like…an emergency kit. That he always takes with him. He takes out a clean, white cloth and wets it with the antiseptic alcohol…stuff. Buffy had never really paid attention.
“Oh, god, don’t tell me you’re, like, a vigilante vampire hunter, or something?” she asks, finally doing as he asks.
He instantly stills from dabbing at the wound at her back, and his voice is urgent and quick when it comes out. “Vampires? You’ve been dealing with vampires?”
“I’m right?” She’s not sure how she should feel about that, really. All that stuff about ‘only she the Slayer’ runs through her head. “Don’t worry, I took care of it. Just a stake in the heart does the trick.”
He relaxes just a little. “Huh.”
“What do you mean, huh?” She stumbles a bit, and it’s as if she’s going to fall, but her father steadies her.
“I mean, that didn’t work on—” He pauses. “I don’t know that we ever tried, but taking his head off didn’t work.”
“Excuse me?” There’s a bit of fear for him, but she quickly clamps it down. “You’re not the Slayer. How did you even get into doing that?”
He frowns. He’s gotten to her face before she realizes it. Her back is definitely stinging but it feels cleaner. “Slayer?” And then, as an afterthought, “I know how to take care of myself, but…this might be a long story. Yare yare.”
She stares at him, lost, and he manages a bit of a gentle smile. “Get some sleep…Buffy. We’ll talk later, I promise.” She’s stopped keeping track of the promises he’s broken, all the lies, but for once she allows herself to believe.
