Buffy blinks, and doesn’t respond, which says she has an opening. “He’s scared, because we’re all he has and he doesn’t want to lose that. Xander’s…” Willow sighs. “Xander’s the type of guy who thinks talking about his feelings or being vulnerable drives people away, partly because his dad was a bastard. He trusts us, but he doesn’t get that he can talk to us because that hasn’t been true. He even lied to me about his dad because he didn’t want me to worry about him.”
Buffy doesn’t know what to say to that, still a little confused, and Willow fixes her with a stare. “Did you tell your mom about being a Slayer? Did you ever think that was a thing that could happen?”
It’s pretty clear when she gets it. It’s kind of written clearly on her face. “So, uh, I apologize and don’t make a big deal out of it so maybe he’ll talk to us more?”
“Probably.” At Buffy’s frown, she shrugs. “I’m trying to figure out how to act normal around him, which probably hasn’t helped anything. He’s like…a big spiky cat. Fluffy with claws and pride.” He’s very affectionate when he doesn’t think he’s made a fool of himself, but he’ll slink off almost immediately when he’s embarrassed. And he likes to show off. Maybe that’s why. She’s always liked cats.
“I believe in you,” Buffy states almost immediately, which makes her smile. Maybe it’s the confidence in her voice, or the way she’s acting protective of his right to feel however he feels, even if he’s not in love with her. Because it’s not like he can force himself to love her, and pretending would just make them both miserable. There’s probably a love spell, or something, but that would be Wrong, with a capital W.
Surprisingly, the thought that makes her giggle doesn’t feel like she’s trying too hard, or anything. “Well, there is the single issue that I’m not sure I can act normal around anyone, but normal’s overrated anyway.”
“You’re right about that,” Buffy agrees with a smile. “All right, time to find him and apologize!”
She half sounds like a cheerleader before she wanders off. Willow isn’t sure if she realizes. Or if Buffy even had been in a cheerleading team, before all this. If so, that’s kind of sad. She might’ve even had a social life before all this.
At least she seems to be enjoying her life here, even if she hadn’t chosen it. She isn’t miserable or anything. Which is good.

“Buffy, stop. It’s not about you.” Here she is, trying not to make trouble for Xander, and she’s made it worse, and now Buffy’s mad. She can at least try to fix her mistake.
