After meeting Giovanni, Desmond really should’ve expected the man to throw him another curve ball. At least this time, he has a little advance warning—mostly through Eagle Vision, though the man approaching him does make a misstep and clatter against the rooftop after Desmond catches the first glimpse out of the corner of his eye. Federico, it turns out, and yeah of course that’s who he chose. Ezio and Claudia aren’t even Assassins, yet. Well, Ezio sort of is, but it’s not like Giovanni knows that, or even really probably should. He’s probably trying to keep his other kids out of it, and once Desmond had indicated that yeah, he wouldn’t mind if it was someone other than Ezio, he’d obviously changed his mind. Maybe he’s interrogating them about them both having Eagle Vision, or something. Sending Federico is a way for him to take more control over the situation, and prevent him from just plotting further with Ezio without keeping him in the loop.
Unfortunately, Federico is looking a little bit...murdery. Desmond has to reel in the ‘oh, it’s just my older brother’ instinct and actually take it seriously, because he’s pretty sure Federico cares a little more about protecting his immediate family (not that Desmond’s too connected anyway, if you get technical about it). And he’s not blue like Giovanni had been, meaning that while he’d convinced Giovanni, Federico isn’t quite so sure he’s on their side.
Maybe if he makes it a little clearer he’s an Assassin? Preemptively greeting him should help, right? “Hey, Federico.”
The footsteps falter briefly, but only briefly. “So I hear you’re the stronzo who’s gotten my brother and sister involved in a conspiracy.”
...Oh. Maybe he’s doing this on his own, without orders from Giovanni? And that is totally not what Desmond thought he’d be upset about; he would’ve thought the complaint would be about Claudia’s poetry. Good to know he’s actually being a good protective older brother. And fortunately, that an accuation that’s really easy to counter. “Actually, if I had my way, I would’ve done all of this on my own, but do you know how nosy and stubborn your entire family is?” It’s not like that’s something he can even argue, because it’s very true and they both know it.
Fortunately, that’s enough for Federico to stop looking quite so murdery. “My apologies, Messere. I should’ve known.”
Desmond shrugs. No harm done. “Hey, if I had to read Claudia being awful at poetry for that long, I’d be on a hair trigger too.”
Federico frowns—oh yeah, he probably shouldn’t be using slang, even if it’s apparently still translating a little. Somehow. He’s guessing weird Isu powers, because weird Isu powers are probably to blame for him being here, too. “On edge. Ready to pick a fight at any moment,” he explains.
Federico sighs. “I’m relieved to know that was purposeful. I was beginning to worry my sister was losing her wits, distraught at the loss of Duccio’s affections.”
And maybe he shouldn’t be explaining this, even though Federico’s probably just going to find it funny and maybe tease Claudia a bit, but he definitely doesn’t want to tick off Federico when he’s barely gotten the guy and Giovanni on his side. “Oh, no, that’s all just punishment. Mostly for him, and maybe a little bit for you since I don’t think she likes being watched all the time. It’s an outlet since she can’t quite get away with just outright stabbing the bastard.”
And, just as he suspected, Federico laughs, relaxing further. “I should have realized, with Claudia’s temper. Now, I have been instructed to escort you to your new accommodations, but I have a request. Would you mind demonstrating your capabilities as an Assassin, specifically blending into a crowd? I am eager to see any differences in techniques, Messere Arden.”
And by that, he means that he wants to see exactly how much Desmond actually knows, but it’s fair enough—he’d want to know the skills of his allies, too, and this seems like a good time to learn how good Federico is. “Lead the way.”
