Giles starts talking about his findings. And it’s not like Johan has much of anything else to do. All he can do is listen, given that he hasn’t figured out navigation on his own, being practically waited on by his mom and Andrew and none of the memories he can access have knowledge of braille, so he’d have to learn that to even start to be able to be helpful when it came to research. Well, there was always that text-to-speech stuff, not that he’s particularly familiar with it, but given what happened the last time they tried to digitize any of Giles’ research materials or read them out loud, he’s not sure the Watcher would be all too happy about any efforts on that front. He will give the guy a point, there; it’s not like he’d be too useful fighting a summoned demon if it goes wrong, either. And sure, someone could read and summarize to him, but they might as well just read on their own and skip the step with him.
It’s not like he’s had anything to do. He is, in fact, intensely bored, despite the fact that Josephine Higashikata is a woman with a bunch of amazing stories, not all of which he’s even seen with his own Stand. And actually listening to this, connecting the dots, finding a useful connection and pointing it out, that’d be a pretty good way to beginning to prove to himself and everyone else that he’s not worthless, that he can still do something useful.
But this isn’t even interesting stuff about demons and he finds himself zoning out no matter how hard he tries to concentrate. It’d been hard enough at school, but he is just so very bored.
He’s talking about a bunch of real estate records, apparently. Which just further confirms Xander’s opinion that Giles is, in fact, a nerd. And he knows people, Willow included, that would say that those with really nice English accents, such as Giles, could read absolutely anything and make it be interesting, but he’s pretty sure even Fitz couldn’t make this sound interesting.
And then Giles clears his throat after an amount of time that Johan couldn’t even begin to guess. It doesn’t matter how long it’s been since he was a teenager, though, he immediately snaps to attention, even straightening from his slouch in the chair. It wouldn’t matter that much if it wasn’t his extremely disappointed clearing of the throat, and no matter how much he’d enjoyed his pastime of making the man clean his glasses (which might be a hobby he’ll have to replace, now), he didn’t actually want to disappoint someone else in his life. Sometimes, he didn’t bother because he figured it was inevitable, but he tried not to when he could help it.
“This information is actually important, but I suppose I will summarize.” Xander carefully doesn’t fidget, and it’s only the fact that he’s still and listening intently that he realizes he wasn’t the only one bored to tears by all this, which makes sense. Giles wouldn’t be half this annoyed if it was just him. If he had to guess, it’s Buffy—she’d always been better with the hitting than the reading, which he gets.
If only he could do either. Oh well. Feeling sorry for himself isn’t too pretty.
“I suppose it is perhaps a little drier than our usual research,” he allows, trying to inject some amount of patience back into his voice. It’s not just pity, Johan hopes, but it’s been...rougher than usual for all of them. And it’d been partly Giles’ fault, with the whole ‘trial’ thing that Xander hadn’t thought about in a while and now feels weird about now that he has. He sighs. If he needed any proof his brain was after him, this is pretty good evidence. Thanks, brain. “Real estate records are widely agreed upon as being less than engaging at the best of times, so I suppose several of you will be happy that I was the one doing so. If Sarde was some sort of supplier, I wanted to find anything regarding his holdings. I was able to find a few transactions by word of mouth, though there’s little legitimately reported to the proper authorities. There’s a warehouse in Italy, though he doesn’t actually own it—the name on the paperwork is Morricone. Giorno assures me that is not a pseudonym of our mysterious enemy, so I suspect that is roughly a dead end. However, there is no physical storefront and no business registered under Sarde’s name, despite him acting as some sort of dealer of art, perhaps as a front for something else. I would suspect that his only work is through word of mouth and is highly likely to be underhanded if not black market. I have only been able to find one other instance of his name in conjunction with regards to actually recorded ownership, despite having recruited the help of Father Styx and his group.”
“Where?” Josie asks brightly, and he winces a little internally because he knows that precise tone of cheerful destruction. She’s ticked off and looking for something she can take it out on. Honestly, probably because of his situation.
“A real estate deal in Brazil.” ...Okay, that’s new. They hadn’t even run into the guy except in Mexico and the United States, apparently, and from his vague memories he’d gotten from dreams (and also his mum), Sarde didn’t have any connections in Brazil, either. “The records are….less than itemized. I loathe dealing with those infernal machines…” ...It sounds like he still doesn’t get along with computers. Xander hides a grin. Then again, right now he has to relearn everything too. At least there’s accessibility stuff, even if he’d never bothered looking too hard into it, but he kind of has to, now. And—hang on, thank goodness for a public education, at least Miss Calendar taught her students including him to touch-type, before she was murdered. “...but they do have some advantages, specifically when the original likely only appears in physical records and those physical records likely only exist in Brazil, thus requiring travel or a contact to tract them down. The only reason I found anything at all is that the Brazilian government recently before his disappearance charged him with tax fraud.” Ah, that one trick that brings down even the hardest of criminals. “I have yet to be able to discover the previous owners, but seeing as it seems highly unlikely he used the location himself…”
“Maybe he was acquiring it for someone else, and maybe there’s a clue there,” Willow finishes excitedly.
It's not much, but it's something. And it's probably more than this guy, whoever he is, ever intended to leave. They'll chase this bread crumb trail right to the wicked witch.
...He’s not sure which of his more dramatic relatives he’s channeling right now, but he’s pretty sure there’s at least one. Maybe more than one.
