“Who are you emailing, Mom?” Johan really is learning to adapt, even just a little, concentrating on his hearing because that’s what he has, now. He’s putting on a brave face, happy and friendly and masking absolutely all the turmoil he has inside, and maybe she does, in fact, have at least a couple maternal instincts bouncing around somewhere inside her noggin because all she wants to do is hug the stuffing out of him until all that hurt goes away. Not that that’ll work, but she’s tempted to try it anyway and will it into being effective with the power of her mind.
The issue is that she doesn’t know what she’s doing, any more than he does. She hadn’t been trying to ignore him or neglect him, but this time, she’s doing it when she actually has her full memory and mind and oh no. And just because it was so easy to forget is no excuse. Just because she’d been doing it surreptitiously out of sight doesn’t mean he can’t hear her typing away on her phone. “Oh, uh, your grandpa. You might have a new grandma soon.”
At least he laughs. It’s a little hollow, like everything else. Apparently he’d had a hard enough time adapting to the loss of the one eye, angry and hurt and struggling to find his place in the world again. Now, once he’s gotten comfortable, secure in his sense of self, he’s lost the use of the other, and other than a few outbursts he’s been trying to pretend like everything’s fine and if anything in this he’s a worse liar than Cousin Jotaro if he’d even try, despite the name of his Stand. “Ojiichan, chatting up some woman, huh? What’s she like?”
He also hasn’t noticed a single time he’s dipped between American English, British English, or Japanese, but given that she can follow along and keep the conversation going fluently, she hasn’t mentioned it to anyone beside his doctors, yet. And so far from what they can tell it’s mainly just a matter of this new injury impacting his sleep, which his Stand is intricately connected to, and thus the functioning of his Stand, rather than something serious like a brain injury. Despite the fact that there’s nothing wrong and his sight hasn’t returned.
Still, if she can distract him with a little gossip, maybe it’s for the best, after all. Aunt Yukako says she’s a real sweetie—covered in burns from the holy water and she asks about everyone else first. And she was jealous of our family.
That laugh is real, unexpected. “Ohhh nooo, you’re kidding,” he gasps, burying his face in the blankets.
“Hey, I kinda think the idea of having a demon stepmom is kinda neat,” she responds, mock defensive, but then, he’s probably dealt with a lot of demons over the years, right? Most of whom weren’t friendly, so…
And then, because he can’t do it himself, he pulls out Pretender to stare at her incredulously. Him vaguely staring into her general direction doesn’t have quite the same effect, apparently. “I’m just shocked I came by it honestly. Do you know how many demons I’ve dated over the years? Even with my whole teenage angst ‘all vampires and therefore demons are evil’ phase? Pretty sure most of the people who know me would say something similar, like ‘oh no I should’ve expected this’.”
He’s a good man, and she wishes she could say she had much to do with it.
“That being said...if she’s in Wolfram & Hart, she’s in danger. Sure, following cult rules a lot of the face people don’t actually know all the details of what’s going on behind the curtain, but she’s learned more than she’s supposed to and they’ll probably try to get her to sign something new. I get the feeling she’d immigrated and they swept in to take advantage.”
That’s scummy, and from the tone in his voice… “Seen a lot of that, then?” It’s as the words are leaving her mouth that she realizes that’s probably one of the absolutely worst ways she could’ve put that, at this moment in time, but it’s too late to take them back, so she just has to hope he doesn’t notice that or her wincing. Somehow.
“Yeah...something humans and demons have in common, no matter how much we’d like to erase that.” Xander yawns and shivers, withdrawing back into the safety of the blankets. Honesty, as plans go, she doesn’t blame him for that one bit. Some days you just want to opt out of in the comfort of some soft blankets.
“Well, if it helps, I’m pretty sure Cugino Giorno will fight it with everything he has. And he’s got mob lawyers. And a dragon.” It’s nice, a little less awkward, that she doesn’t have to explain any of this. That he already knows what she’s talking about. It’s because of his Stand, sure, but it feels in moments like this that they hadn’t lost any time whatsoever.
“You want a dragon.” He’s trying to sound dry and unamused, but he’s not quite managing it.
“Because, be honest with me, is there a more badass way of traveling? Dentist appointment? Dragon. Meeting future in-laws? Dragon.” She’s not really exaggerating anything, just being herself, because he needs it.
“Well, that’s definitely a step up from a shotgun.” He shrugs. “Personally, I think it’s all fun and games until someone asks you if you have a license for your dragon.”
She doesn’t get to quip back as they’re interrupted by a knock at the door, and it turns out that Xander’s actually earned room service. She helps Andrew-kun bring in a tray of food, and mmm, it looks pretty good, mostly like someone had attempted to cram every kind of pastry, sweet and savory, into one place. She’d also say it’s way too much food and maybe meant for them both, but, well, from what she hears, he’s almost got her appetite.
“I, um. I hope you feel better, Xander,” the warlock tells them and attempts to slip out.
“Thanks, Andrew. Just, uh, me sitting here with nothing to do but talk and think and sleep. The guy that attacked Wolfram & Hart—it wasn’t the Siphon guy someone mentioned, right?”
And he’s still trying to prove he’s useful. Is it normal to want to smother your offspring in a hug?
“No, Buffy and Officer Higashikata met him and they would’ve recognized him. I would’ve liked to loop in, uh, his police officer I met, you know, unofficially, ask him what he thinks, but the guy didn’t even show up on the cameras. It probably isn’t a power that stops him from appearing in photos or whatever, because none of the rest appeared on the footage, either, so while doing his maintenance stuff it looks like he triggered the overwriting feature, or something. Sorry, I’m not the technical guy.”
“No worries. Thanks for the food, Andrew. It smells delicious.” And sure, he might sound perfectly casual, but she knows he’s still thinking about it even as he fights her for the pork pie.
