People like to blame “overtagging” on new imports from, like, tumblr and wattpadd. I would like to show the exhibit of really old fanfics in, say, the Downey Sherlock Holmes films, circa 2012. It’s always been a thing. (but not Ohio.) The norms may be different in different fandoms, but I guess I’d never seen it as quite the plague everyone else is I remember seeing a lot of people do it from Ye Olden Dayes. (And being envious that I couldn’t do the same on Dreamwidth, because limited tags to use.)
