I’m rather grumpy when I answer the door. That’s what happens when it’s Cleaning Day, the dreaded holiday. I hate it, mostly the smells that don’t go away. I could use Febreze like the rest of the general masses, but since it made me sneeze, I placed all my hope and trust in our collection of candles instead. Steel, in the middle of knocking again, freezes. He still recovers faster than the average Joe, but I saw the moment his mind BSOD’d and needed a reboot. “I’m sorry, am I interrupting?”
I groan, but step out of the way, an invitation in everything but name. (I’m not going to name it. I’m not that lacking in self-preservation, thank you very much.) “Drain gunk waits for no one, even a wizard, I’m sad to say. Sorry it’s not glamorous.” He’s not used to me being so casual, even considering my normal clothes, I guess, as he takes another slightly wide-eyed glance in my general direction and then ducks past me. Just a moment of hesitation, but for a man with split-second timing and the killing instincts of a wolf, it’s a yawning chasm. I’d put on some old, ratty things, since I had a minor breakdown every time one of my clothes got a hole in it. Willow’s frankly surprised I didn’t accidentally burn down the city during the moth epidemic, even with the fact fire’s not my element.
“I can say with utter certainty, I don’t need you to be glamorous.” Yeesh, and the daily reminder of a mob boss’s little crush had arrived. I’d wondered if it’d gotten lost on the way here. Funny, given that all its undefined-gender famiglia had found my place no problem, but maybe it just happened to be the directionally challenged one or something.
“I know, and you having no expectations weirds me out.” He looks a little hurt at that, not on his own behalf, I’m fairly certain, but on mine.
Still weird.
