“Come on, Marchant, it’s going to be fine.”
Marchant groans, letting out a deep breath.  “I mean, yeah, probably, but you just invoked pretty much all of the genre-savvy rules, Vasquez.”  He shivers and holds up a hand.  “And I don’t wanna hear anything about ‘you’re so superstitious’, either.  We’ve been learning that magic is real and witches are a thing, so who’s to say that you can’t jinx us all like that?”
She shrugs, smiling.  “Well, we’ve even got a Stand User this time.  We’ve all heard about what happened in 1987, but we’re not Dr. Kujo.  We’re not trouble magnets.”
Galanis clears her throat, rolling her eyes.  “Be that as it may,” she begins, voice weary from the effort of keeping two of her team members from sniping at each other, “…stay focused.  The track record doesn’t matter; this is the most dangerous assignment any Speedwagon Foundation agent that is not a Joestar has had in a long time.  We are here to gather intel and get out.”
“Seriously, that serial killer situation was pretty dangerous and no agent got hurt during that,” Vasquez continues.
“You’re just making it worse,” Marchant utters under his breath.
“Lighten up!  I mean, if anything happens, Dunstan’s got our back, doesn’t he?  Maybe Shizuka would’ve been more useful, but hey, he’s a good backup, right?”  She elbows Dunstan, who just turns his gaze slowly to meet hers, seemingly emotionless.  “I, uh, I’ll take that as a yes,” she laughs nervously, quieting down.
Galanis shakes her head but continues the briefing.  “Now, if there was any viable alternative to coming here at night, we would have done so, given what we know now.  The enemy, Wolfram & Hart, are known to employ demons as well as Stand Users, and they had an Arrow in their possession for at least some time, though no one has been able to confirm they still have it after the ISWC’s strike on their transport.  In addition, they use some sort of magic to ensure their employees return after their death, meaning that they showed absolutely no restraint in using it on every single one of their employees, meaning that we have absolutely no idea how many Stand Users they have in their employ.”
She pauses briefly, waiting until Vasquez and Marchant stop making faces at each other before continuing.  “Mr. Wyndam-Price might have broken off from his faction or made some enemies for his actions, but we cannot count on this as ‘the thing that will save us’.  From what we heard about Johan, it is very likely that he has been planning this move for quite some time.”
She pulls out the map; what there is of it, anyway.  The site is smaller than many they have gone to—and uncomfortably close to Guadalajara, though oddly the area seems deserted.  The scarier part is that while Wolfram & Hart’s employees could easily have scared off any locals potentially hanging around, there aren’t any visible enemies, either.  “We know he is planning what is called an Ascension Ritual specifically, trying to become a Pillar Man, hence his coming to an area deep in the heart of their former empire.  We need to locate him without getting spotted ourselves and confirm the presence of any object, such as the Stone Mask, that might be useful for that ritual.  We also need to be aware that he will probably have gathered all of his employees here, so watch out for any possible ambush.”
At least those two glance up at that.  Unless someone’s using a Stand or other way to hide, though, there’s no one in sight.  “If possible, we can also try to hide or destroy such objects as long as it is guaranteed we can do so without getting spotted.  We can’t count on backup from any of the Joestars or our current allies.  We’re not sure where Johan and his allies are or whether they’re already inside, but Josephine, the ISWC, Dr. Kujo, and the rest are on their way and probably will not arrive while we work.
“It doesn’t look like much.”  Irreverent as always, that Vasquez.
“Sorry it can’t always be Cairo.”  Too bad Dr. Kujo isn’t here; he might get annoyed at working with them, but at least he keeps them in line.
“Ma’am.”  Dunstan doesn’t tend to speak up much, so when he does, it’s relevant.  He’s pointing at one of the stone outcroppings closest to them.  What’s written there is, well.
It could be a prank.  The earliest known graffiti was possibly dated as far back as 13,000 BCE in Argentina as pictures of hands.  All the common motives for graffiti existed even historically, too—vulgar drawings, ‘graffiti artist was here’, the urge to create art, and even, like in this case, the desire to scare or share one’s terror, such as survivors of war.  The letters don’t gleam and aren’t quite red enough; the colour could easily have been created for effect using spraypaint, or—no, maybe not.  The drips seem to indicate something more like a conventional paintbrush.
Vasquez laughs at their solemnity, reaching out to run a finger along the so-called 'blood'.  It's completely dry.  “You’re all taking this too seriously.  ‘Come play my game I’ll test you’,” she reads, matching the lack of punctuation.  The ‘blood’ seems to melt down the wall, gathering into a little pool at the bottom, before flowing away like it has a mind of its own.
Just like Vasquez, who follows it as if in a trance.
“It’s a Stand?” Marchant exclaims, worried, which is a nice surprise.  It’s good to know he cares about his teammate even if he finds her very frustrating on occasion.
Dunstan nods, summoning Stone Temple Pilot.  Galanis had never quite gotten used to being able to see them—she hadn’t gotten far into learning hamon, but it had been enough to be able to see Stands.  The emaciated reptilian form is slightly unsettling, possibly due to how pointy and therefore dangerous it looks, with hands made of cones, and spikes on its head like a crown.  It honestly looks like a prehistoric nightmare, with bulging eyes and unexpressive mouth and the only trace of clothing a belt.  But then, it matched Dunstan, and while her team did not always work with him, she’d trust him with her life.  He might be quiet like his Stand, but that doesn’t mean she should be judging either of them harshly.  “I’ll find them,” he states with confidence, Pilot already walking toward the pyramid in front of Vasquez and Marchant and merging into the stone without hesitation.
“Should we follow her and try to stop her?” Marchant asks anxiously, and while Galanis gets the urge, that’s not the best move.
“No,” Dunstan responds, leaving her as the leader to elaborate.
“Without knowing the rules of this Stand we could easily get trapped, too.  Better to try to let Dunstan’s Stand find the User.”  He shifts uncomfortably, but follows orders.
