madimpossibledreamer: Jotaro pointing at the camera (kujo)

spotted by beta-senpai in a Life of Richard Burton biography, paraphrased because I don't have it in front of me: "The saving of Kars was thought to be a necessity by the British."  They failed to tell one Brit-American.  (Kars being a fortress.  In searching for it, Google gave me 'Kars4kids is a scam'.  So yes, thanks to Araki's Stand everything is now a Jojo's reference.  (He is also still a Pillar Man, but apparently this Pillar Man was able to acquire a Stand.)

Main Points:
Jojo's Bizarre Adventure/Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Summary: Buffy needs to know.
Word Count: 520
Rating: Teen
Warnings: some problematic parenting, some ableism, for a slightly spoilery analysis go here

Jotaro-san is very thorough.  She’d known that, of course, even if she’d forgotten in the intervening years.  Still, in the meantime, she’d thought Giles was a stickler for crossing the ts and dotting the is.  Giles had seen the mask from the art museum, and Buffy had a weird feeling about it, and her dad nodded, attention as intense as ever, and then insisted on searching the whole house anyway, leaving a terse instruction for any of them to yell the moment they notice anything strange.
It hurts, a little, because they were just starting to get used to him, and now he’s putting them off again.  Worse, she can’t tell if he’s mad at her, somehow.  She’s pretty sure not; she’s gotten better at reading him than when she was a four-year old sitting at the top of the stairs listening to him leave again.  But the brusque way he moves and the fact that he hasn’t said anything make her wonder.
Then again, she knows she hasn’t tried to speak up and fill the silence, either, and she knows that’s more noticeable.  He’s glanced at her a couple times, in between staring at everything with green eyes that see everything and admit nothing.
She knows she shouldn’t have been listening in, either, but it’s not like it’s her fault Slayer hearing is as good as it is.  And while he might not have said it, it’s clear he’s just as floundering in being a parent as her Mom, that he’s trying to imitate Holly, as unnatural as that fit is.  But still, it’s bothering her.  The fact that they’d been talking about her without her being there, for one thing.
Eventually, she can’t take it anymore.  “You don’t want a normal daughter?”
“Yare yare daze.”  He almost doesn’t answer, Buffy’s sure.  Maybe he’s mad she was listening in.  She’s not about to apologize for that.  It’s a good thing she has Slayer hearing when he finally responds, quiet and probably embarrassed.  “I want you to be you.”
That’s right, she dredges up out of long-ago memories.  Charlie Brown.  He’d translated the catchphrase ‘good grief’ as ‘yare yare daze’ before adding that it could also be ‘give me a break’.  How funny.
Maybe that’s just her brain trying to distract her from the fact that he’s a complete jerk and he’s not allowed to keep making her cry like this.
“What are we looking for, exactly?”  Because she’s pretty sure she hasn’t missed anything, and he’d been doing so well at following her lead up till now.
“Just observing everything,” he answers, short and inscrutable, and she resists the urge to sigh.
This isn’t the same, she tries to promise herself, even if that might not be her promise to make.  He’s hiding things again.  The only remark he’d made about being normal was being amused at his own ridiculous idea that she’d be normal, most likely because he’s anything but.
They’re a lot alike, now that she’s looking.  Now that she’s thinking about it.  Sometimes she’ll keep secrets to protect others, and she’s pretty sure that’s why he was gone so much, too.  So if he’s being close-lipped now, he’s worried, which means—
“Do you think the person who did this had a Stand?” she follows up, and he pulls the hat further down over his eyes, like they’re what gave him away.
“You’re probably right and it’s not, but…I need to be sure,” is his answer, and that’s definitely like looking in a mirror.  He’s so desperate to protect people that he’s hypervigilant and maybe, just maybe, going overboard.
“We’ll keep looking, and then we’ll go research.  You’ve got people at the Speedy Wagon Foundation you can talk to, right?”
He glances at her, slightly incredulous, and then snorts, tension leaking from his muscles quickly.  “Yeah.”
“Sounds like a plan,” she states cheerfully, and that may or may not be a smile.
