It’s a good thing they’re bracing, and their Stands are helping absorb some of the energy. If Fitz’s plan works to perfection, it might not end up being necessary, but it’s better to take all the precautions. The plane occasionally shudders, and it’s hard to tell whether that’s further damage, current damage, also known as the airplane slowly falling apart (technical terms; Johan knows them), or the wind, if there is any. A part of Jojo wants the control, because he knows how to do this, he’s good at it, and apparently he’s bad at stepping back and letting other people take control. It didn’t used to be that way, but then, he didn’t used to have this power, didn’t used to be one of the main hitters. Maybe he’d be a little more sympathetic to Buffy, now, because he knows he can do it and he really doesn’t want anyone to get hurt because he just stood aside. It doesn’t feel like when Joseph had ditched the other plane in the water. Part of it might be that the other had been a passenger plane, of course, because while the larger size would experience more force from the amount of surface area hitting the water, it’s also more material to absorb the impact. The cargo bay in a passenger plane would have hit first, followed by—
You’re such a nerd, Cousin Jotaro.
That’s so random. He’s pretty sure he hasn’t mirrored Josephine yet, at least not for long, but then, there’s probably a pretty good psychological reason for that. Same thing for Grandpa, now that he’s thinking about it.
Mentally he shrugs and utters a quick yare yare daze because he doesn’t have time for any of this out loud. They hit the water and bounce, just like jumping on a bed or bouncy castle, and bounce again, even softer, coming to an easy rest. At least LJ can fly, by the way of floating in its own summoned ‘water’, so sending it out of the plane wasn’t a problem, really. The only issue was that Fitz couldn’t use Lotus Juice to protect his head, but then, the shell was too hard and the vine-tentacles were too soft, so it wouldn’t have done much of use in that department anyway. At least Pretender has an extra hand if Jojo uses one for them both, no matter how much Fitz glares at him for using it to protect his friend.
The instant they stop bouncing and settle, Whisper unfurls himself from where he’s curled around her head, cushioning agains impact. Johan trades a smile and a thumbs-up with Darling, who starts removing all of her restraints helping to protect herself from the landing. It seems like Fitz’s own restraints probably should’ve been flagged on the last inspection, because they seem to have malfunctioned, but it’s easy enough for Pretender to snap by hand, even if it hurts a little to do so.
At least he knows they can swim, thanks to the researcher who’d tried to kill them. Darling and Fitz, at least. It suddenly occurs to him that maybe Jotaro would know or have heard of the guy. Maybe he should ask Jotaro about him, or check out Jotaro’s memories, at some point. Now isn’t the time, though.
Robin and Von Stroheim haven’t evacuated yet, by the time they get to the cockpit, and Xander’s about to ask before Beefheart summons her cyborg-looking Stand. He’d gotten used to using the products of Panzermensch’s power and completely forgotten that it was usually humanoid. It punches the door open, and the water rushes in, covering their feet and rocking the balance of the floating plane.
The water’s not cold, is the first thing Johan notices. Much better than the Sea of Japan, if Jotaro and Joseph’s memories can be trusted. He experiences a moment of panic, like he can’t breathe, and the next thing he knows Fitz is discreetly helping him inflate his own life vest.  Fortunately he’s not visibly floundering, but hey, unwanted fish DNA might actually be good for something for once. The others don’t seem to have noticed, and he concentrates on breathing. Robin’s helping Darling, so he turns his attention back to the blond. “You know when I say ‘come in, the water’s not cold’, and it’s a lie? And it’s totally not, right now? Did you do something?”
The blond shakes his head, amused. Though he’s lost his hat again. That happens so often, these days. “I had nothing to do with it, Jojo. I tried using the healing power of Reverse the Destiny, and apparently I can also ‘heal’ an aeroplane, but I can’t manipulate the temperature. That actually has to do with the origin of Lake Chapala—it’s an ancient caldera, and it’s still naturally heated by geothermal activity, so it makes sense that it’s warm.”
Johan grins. “Nerd.” It’s pretty obvious that it’s in no way an insult. That he’s just teasing. Maybe he shouldn’t feel quite so comfortable on a battlefield, but then, he grew up on one, so you get used to taking advantage of the breathers along the way, between teachers declaring that failing their class is the end of the world and preventing the latest apocalypse.
Speedwagon glances away, pleased and embarrassed. “The pyramid we’re looking for isn’t too far, but we did get ambushed before we reached our destination. It’s smaller than the ones near Mexico City or in the Yucatan, but we do have a bit of a trek, and hopefully one relatively enemy-less.”
“I wouldn’t count on that,” the Captain interrupts. “At minimum, we have the ones that shot us down.”
“I suppose we don’t need you to make any type of military boat to prevent us from getting hypothermia,” Jojo responds, and Fitz hadn’t been exaggerating when he said he’s doing better, because he obviously bristles but doesn’t speak up and lets it go fairly quickly.
“I wouldn’t say that; we need to get to shore and get dry before nightfall. Since we’re wet, even a slight drop in temperature can be fatal,” Robin adds, matter-of-fact, and it makes sense that he’d be the survival buff.
“I can have Whisper take a look around,” Darling offers, and after a moment Beefheart nods.
They definitely seem to have developed the needed trust through fighting together. That’ll be useful. “All right, but be careful.”
Darling grins, irrepressible. “Oh, I’ve had a lot of practice not getting caught, recently.” She definitely has gotten better since their first encounter, that’s for sure.
