Not beta'd tonight because Beta Senpai shared an argument he was having with a guy online who said that science is the best because it doesn't have practical applications and I went on an hour and a half rant about why that is so wrong (the process of getting grants/publishing papers, the entire medical field, green chemistry, recycling, battery/energy science, analytical chemistry, forensics, to name a few).  Whoops.  That being said, this chapter will be beta'd sometime tomorrow, whenever he actually gets up because I kept him up.  So this chapter brought to you, late (sorry about that) by science ranting and probably too much caffeine.

now beta'd!

Main Points:
Jojo's Bizarre Adventure/Buffy the Vampire Slayer AU
Chapter Summary: Johan's group gets to see Styx in action.
Word Count: 1100
Rating: Teen (Buffy|Jojo's level violence)
Note: HERE THERE PROBABLY BE BUFFY/JJBA SPOILERS

The response is to be expected.  Robin had dared to hope Styx might manage, somehow, to talk some sense into her, but the man had a point.  You can’t help people that don’t want to help themselves.  In the end, the only thing that mattered to her was her own twisted desires.  It’s even less his place to declare her an irredeemable villain than an actual priest, but he’s also not going to stand by and watch as she kills others.  Even if evil is more an action than a person, it’ll still win if others let it happen through their own inaction.
“What do we need to be looking out for, Jojo, Fitz?” he calls.  It’d be good to have the snipers know their targets.
Before either of them can answer, though, Beefheart squeezes off a shot.  Calm and professional as ever.  “I would imagine the answer would be the creepy mutant zombies coming out of the ground everywhere.”
Robin groans, spotting what she’s talking about.  And of course it’s getting dark for absolutely no reason, so it’s not like they can just wait for daytime to come back.  “They’d fit right into one of your horror games.  Or manga.  I hate fighting these things.”
He can hear the smile in her voice as she responds.  “Well, you’re not wrong.”  She breathes in, breathes out, and holds her breath, squeezing off another shot.  It’s clear that it’s not doing a lot of damage, just like his arrows hadn’t been particularly useful against the statues, but physically destroying them, even little by little, might just be enough.  Sure, they might be supernaturally animated, but even that has limits without muscle or tendons.
Pixie, meanwhile, is unfazed by the undead crawling out of the ground and shambling toward the church.  To be fair, the priest also seems entirely unconcerned.  “If you think the church is free of sin, Father, you’re wrong!  It’s no safer than anywhere else!  This whole town is filled with the screams of those killed.”
Styx smiles.  It’s a particularly dangerous smile.  He also takes out his phone, which would be an odd choice in any other circumstances but is probably part of his powers.  “They tend to refer to the grounds of a church as ‘consecrated ground’.  While accurate, it is incomplete when it comes to this particular church.  You should consider it my holy domain, and the unholy dead shall not set foot here.”  He draws a cross on his phone, and apparently that’s all he needed for his spell, because Robin gets his first firsthand look at Styx’s powers.
Robin’s definitely impressed.  He’s done some cool things with hamon, but definitely not on this scale.
A blue, shimmering electricity rises from the ground.  If he’d been close up, like Jojo and Fitz, he probably wouldn’t have seen the pattern, but from a height, it’s clearly obvious—it forms the shape of a cross, connecting the entrance, the church, the cottage, and the small graveyard.  The timing was perfectly planned, too.  Several of the zombies reach the entrance to the church grounds only to disintegrate the second they touch the field, letting out wails.  The way they fall apart looks like the effects of hamon, which is fascinating from an academic standpoint and not at all relevant at the moment.  Darling’s watching with wide eyes, and even Beefheart pauses for a moment and whistles.  Then she gets right back to shooting at the zombies.  Jojo whoops and pumps his fist, and Fitz is smiling but doesn’t otherwise react, water pistol at the ready.  Apparently he doesn’t have enough range on that thing to hit from the bench.  Maybe they should invest in a super-soaker or water rifle or something?
Pixie screams in rage.  “That’s cheating!  You’re supposed to play fair!”  While the light dims to just above the ground, it doesn’t go away, and the next zombie that steps into the area falls apart just like the others.  Nice.
“My dear child, I do believe that most would consider playing necromancer also an unfair play.”  Styx actually appears to be texting without moving his compassionate if disappointed gaze from Pixie.
“Darling, you think Whisper can scout for us?” he asks, before using the hamon breathing technique and loosing off another arrow, burying itself in a zombie skull and disintegrating the entire monster before the power of the Ripple can fade.
The teenager brightens.  “He’s really good at that, yeah.  Though he’ll have to come back to report.”  Whisper appears, snuggles Darling’s cheek, and flies up and away.
Some zombies rise from the ground in the courtyard, but quickly run into trouble from Styx’s technochristian magic field or, for those in the corners of the graveyard, out of the range of its influence.  Robin spares a thought for the bodies—hopefully they’re the bodies of the long-dead, called back as ghosts, rather than the recently deceased that will be missed.  Opened graves would probably bring fresh grief to families and friends.  But then, if any of the others in the town remembered the stories, perhaps it’s a little like the stories (possibly true) that Jojo would tell.
“Focus on the area outside our little safe ground!” Jojo calls, and he and Fitz start moving toward the graveyard.  “Also, an FYI, my ancestor was actually here.  I’m hoping not, but Pixie might be able to call on an echo of Dio Brando, so keep your eyes out for a flamboyantly dressed vampire.”  He moves smoothly into a Hamon-infused kick that takes out another zombie’s entire rib cage, and Fitz melts a grinning zombie behind his friend.  Robin’s impressed again.  It’s not easy to talk and use Sendo, let alone speak that much.
“How’s he compare to Kars?”  It’s probably not great news, no matter the actual answer, from the way Jojo and Fitz had immediately panicked.
Jojo steps out of the way of the next charging zombie so Pretender can punch it straight through the heart.  He seems to be buying himself time to think.  “Without a Stand, probably weaker, straight out?  They’re both really clever, so I wouldn’t rule either of them out.  Dio was easier to provoke, because he’s got an easily bruised ego, but it also made him more vicious.  Jonathan wasn’t even trying.  Easier to wound, too, but the healing factor makes it almost not even a difference.”
Just what Robin thought.  Not great news.
“Do you think the shingles up here are made of wood?” he asks Darling, knocking on them with a knuckle.  She giggles, and Beefheart almost misses her shot.  Whoops.
