buffy is one of those shows where you're supposed to have an amazing team and have a bunch of jerks who mistreat each other instead. don't get me wrong I love them and find some of them easier to write than others but they pretty much all have their selfish "my problems are worse than anyone else's problems woe is me" points. usually depending on episode. (I think depending on which ones current writer likes?)
it fits because they're high schoolers and teenagers are usually selfish (though note that this doesn't excuse Giles or any non-teens in the cast), but. could we have a few more just couple line additions with willow helping the others with their homework? or Giles providing everyone with Earl Grey because "while I realize this isn't coffee and giving the lot of you caffeine is a bad idea I'm aware of how much sleep you've had and know you need it"? People of opposite sexes hanging out with each other with no romantic drama? randomly running into other students?
...basically I think even if they were super short scenes a few lines of dialogue or short scenes in every episode showing the NOT demon of the week or whatever, just them actually being supportive and being friends and hanging out and being normal people would SUPER develop their characters/plot/convince me that these are actually good friends, because overall aside from a few things (*coughSeason6finalecough*) this was told rather than shown. I went along with it anyway because we don't have a cohesive cast in enough shows and I needed the idea to keep enjoying the series but seriously, we needed more.
