          “You’re working out a plan to kill him.”  Nathan’s voice is flat.  Disapproving, to those few who know him well, of which I am one.
          “If he wouldn’t be emotional about it, he’d thank me for it.”  That piece of truth unfortunately does not seem to help, so I continue smoothly.  “If I am to trust his own self-assessment, there is a chance he could become…shall we say, worse than anything he has ever fought.  I am not the sort who can just turn a blind eye to such things.”
          He turns that over in his head and then raises an eyebrow.  “Behaving like Batman?”
          I allow the smirk I would keep inside were we not alone.  “It seems prudent.”  Turning away from matters of the heart… “There is, of course, also the obvious.  Given his nickname for me, Mr. Dresden does not approve of my business.  I will not allow myself to be killed.  Even if it requires killing someone I—”  I swallow the next word, but it seems Hendricks knows what I was about to say anyway.
          “Damn.”  He hadn’t quite realized how potent it was, despite my original declaration of love.  Which makes me, in turn, realize that, blinded by all the other safeguards and precautions and plans I had to set in motion after the incident, I had entirely missed another factor, one Mr. Dresden had no part in.  I would either have to find some way to prevent a soulgaze, or would have to avoid meeting the eyes of every other wizard.  I could always do what I’m doing now, only with more subjects, but eventually even my iron will would crack, and such attachments would be inconvenient at best.  I’d have to speak to Ms. Gard about it.
