Buffy frowns. Usually this would be the point at which Xander would say something snarky, but he’s just contentedly sitting there sharpening one of his daggers instead. It’s a pattern and it’s really starting to weird her out. “Are you not going to say anything about Parker?”
He pauses mid-motion and glances up at her, eye strangely serious and even a little dangerous. “Do you want me to?”
“You didn’t yell at me about abandoning my destiny when I left, or…” she starts, and he holds up his hand.
“Nuthin’ ta forgive. Me an’ my knives an’ the vamps got a few intimate threesomes in. As fer Parker, well…” He shifts, looking a little guilty, a kid caught with a hand in the cookie jar. “He mighta had a nighttime visit from the bogeyman, scare him from pulling that stunt again, but I sure as hell ain’t gonna blame ya for bein’ naïve, ‘specially when it went better than…”
“Than with Angel?” she asks, feeling a stab of guilt, but Xander shakes his head and sighs.
“Ya gotta promise me y’ain’t gonna feel guilty ‘bout this,” he demands, but there’s something gentle and a little broken in his tone.
“I…sure.” It’s not very convincing, mostly because she’s not convinced, but it’s enough for her friend, who continues.
“Faith. Second time I went to find her, get her to turn herself in…” His gaze turns lost.
“She pinned me. Started choking me. She was pressed so tight I could feel she was getting off on it.” She gasps, and he manages a little smile. “I can deal with anything but choking, thanks to Angelus. Too frozen to get stabby. Angel saved me. I stabbed him, which I feel a little weird about now but I think he got it.”
Buffy pulls him to her, and his voice is kind of singsong as he hugs back and tells her “Ya promised, now”.
It gets her to smile, which is probably the point. When he’s not being dumb, he’s actually kind of smart, when it comes to people anyway. “I kind of wish I’d choked her,” she mutters vengefully, and he ruffles her hair.
“Eh, yeh might get a chance at some point,” he tells her.
He probably shouldn’t sound so cheerful about it, but then, Xander’s relationship with violence had become really weird and complicated. And, weirdly, it cheers her up too.
