Summary: Apollo buys presents.
Actual Apollo Justice spoilers, Dual Destinies spoilers, as well as Turnabout Histories spoilers. Spoilers everywhere. But fluff. So much fluff. Mentioned couples under the cut
He’d thought about visiting Lamiroir. She could do with a little encouragement, especially when she’s not allowed to return to Borginia. But given the news and the fact that he won’t be great company right now, he guesses it’s probably better to wait until after the holidays. He pauses just long enough to return the painting to his apartment before he heads off to do the shopping.
It’s far too noisy. Far too crowded. But then, he’d known it would be, leaving it this late.
The newest Doctor Who special is probably enough for Clay. He doesn’t really have enough money to buy the entire season unless Clay’s the only one getting a present this year, but his best friend will understand and won’t mind. Besides, he seems to be enjoying this new Doctor a lot more than Apollo, so it’s only fair that Apollo buys him the least objectionable of the episodes so far, because he’ll be torturing his lawyer friend with it soon enough. Not that it’s terrible, but Apollo can remember the days when it was about space, and the places they went, not about the Doctor and his newest traveling companion’s lives. It’s turned into a drama, not a science fiction show, and Justice doesn’t watch those.
He’s just griping. He needs to stop. It’s Christmas Eve, after all.
He sees a tacky-looking ‘secret message’ pen, and buys it quickly. It’s inexpensive, and Ema might be offended, but he hopes she takes it in the spirit of science it’s intended.
He’s in an ornament store. There’s a sale, a pretty impressive sale at that, so he might as well go with this while he can. There’s a gavel ornament, for the Judge, who’d probably be tickled pink and show it to his grandson and whatever else he usually says while Apollo’s staring holes in the witness. An adorable looking top hat and rabbit for Trucy. Not that she’s tried the trick yet, probably because it was difficult keeping a rabbit in the Wright Anything Agency. It might be easier or more difficult now, what with the fact that it’s Edgeworth’s house, technically, and there’s a dog in the house which may or may not eat other pets and stuff. Not that it has, or has tried. It hasn’t had a chance. But it’s important to make sure that pets get along before buying them, which is kind of a difficult thing to do, honestly.
He debates for a few seconds, then adds a small origami crane made of fine metalwork to the growing basket. It’s a bird, and Maggie can use all the luck she can get. The miniature detective’s badge kind of works for Gumshoe. Though Justice hopes nobody’s buying these and waving them around, pretending to be a real detective and getting away with it. Given some of Wright’s cases, it’s not the most far-fetched thing he’s heard.
He sighs and adds a footprint. The ornaments really are on sale, so he might as well. Ema will probably be surprised and not a little suspicious at receiving two gifts, unless he can pawn off one of them as a present from Santa or something. Probably the pen, since he’s going with a theme here. Or he could just leave it in his closet until next year. Maybe. If Trucy doesn’t find it first.
He grimaces, but adds the whip to the growing collection. It will—probably—amuse the Prosecutor, so he might escape unscathed. He’s not sure whether she’s going to attend the party, but given her attachment to the Brüder who no longer remembers her as a sister, she probably will be. Samurai sword, Blackquill, same. It’d be good if he doesn’t get hurt on Christmas.
Athena’s harder. He sits, thinking, before moving on. He can come back to her.
Wright’s fairly easy. There’s a phoenix. At least someone besides himself will be amused by this one, even if Wright himself might not be. It’s hard to tell with that man.
A teacup. It looks dainty, but the owner assures him that it will survive a lot. All of the ornaments will. Ordinarily, he might be offended, but given his life, it’s for the best, really. Maybe he should see if he can get some actual loose leaf tea afterwards, depending on how much he spends here. It never hurts to be extra polite to the boss. Sort of. If he can manage it, and not voice his sarcastic comments all the time. Or even think them, sometimes.
Maya’s easy; a burger. He doesn’t know her very well, here or back before all of this, but when she comes she’s always talking about burgers.
Prosecutor Faraday. A Blue Badger. No matter how creepy he personally finds them.
Pearls. He almost gets her a Steel Samurai, then hesitates. Edgeworth might be hurt on not getting a Steel Samurai too, if he does. …He can get him a Steel Samurai pen or something. He adds it to the list.
Who’s he forgetting? Wright, check. Edgeworth, check. Trucy, check. Maggie and Gumshoe, both check. Ema, check. The Judge, whose name he doesn’t even know, and he didn’t realize that until this moment. Check. Prosecutor Blackquill, Prosecutor Von Karma, checks. Athena, right, he has to go back to Athena. Clay, check. Right, he was going to get something for Wocky. He might as well get something for Vera. And Lamiroir. Though by now, it’s almost as if he’s paying them for taking on their case. At least it was good publicity. Sort of. Klavier…right. He should probably get the guy a couple things. Chocolate is pretty easy. Well…he’ll have to get a German brand, or something, which won’t be cheap, but it’ll still be easier to find than some other things, if not to pay for. An ornament that fits him…that’s going to be almost as hard as with Athena. And…something else.
“What’s a good luck ornament?” He already has the origami crane. He’d known about that from the one time that Trucy had decided they needed a lot of luck and roped him into trying to fold a thousand origami cranes. They’d stopped when his fingers started bleeding enough to make it too slippery to continue. But he’s not sure about others.
The owner jumps into action, showing him shamrocks, pigs, acorns, shells, geckos, pretzels, crickets, tigers…
The mention of dolphin reminds him of something, though he’s not sure what. But he goes with it, putting it in the basket too, as the owner beams.
They have a pair of handcuffs. He raises an eyebrow, but adds them. And a paintbrush, that almost looks like you could actually paint with it. Lamiroir…a butterfly. Now that she has her sight back, she can appreciate how it looks like her outfit. He’d get her something music related, but they can’t really make an ornament for someone singing, unless they depict exactly that which isn’t exactly what he’s looking for, and the piano might still be a bit of a sore subject. Maybe he should rope her into caroling too. Next year, probably.
Now, Klavier. He could get a piano. At one point, Athena had told him that that’s what the name Klavier means. But the younger Gavin doesn’t play piano. He could see Kristoph playing one, but not Klavier. It’s a thought that makes the smile on his face falter, but he pushes through. The guitars are…a little tacky. He’d think about it. The man is goofy enough, after all. But it’s not quite…
He casts his mind back. Christmas trees are, apparently, an important German thing, considering how seriously Klavier was taking decorating his own. What kind of ornaments did he own?
There was a pig, which Apollo found surprising, but if it’s a traditional German good luck thing, he can see it. He already has a guitar, actually. Several of them, with little strings and everything. And bells. He’s half convinced that Klavier’s favorite Christmas song is Carol of the Bells. There’s lollipops, chocolate squares that aren’t actually chocolate, gingerbread men and women. ‘Cheese’. Pinecones and icicles. Steel Samurai, Jammin’ Ninja, and a few other things Apollo doesn’t recognize. Klavier kind of is a geek, even if it’s not immediately obvious. He has every kind of ornament. What more could he…?
Nutcrackers. There’s a huge variety of nutcrackers. Klavier honestly looks like he’s been collecting them. He can probably find something that isn’t duplicated, right?
He starts walking through that section, and then starts laughing, plucking the ornament off the tree.
He’s pretty sure it is. A Klavier Gavin nutcracker in the middle of one of his air guitars. It’s hilarious, and he can’t help it. Hopefully, Klavier’s as amused as he is. How many does he have? Seventeen. The sale’s buy one, get one free, so he might as well get something for himself. It won’t be antenna, though, no matter if that’s what most of the people he knows would have gone with. TARDIS? Or a mini briefcase, despite the fact that he doesn’t use one?
The briefcase would match the goofy Gavin ornament. He gets that one.
It’s actually not as bad on his wallet as he was guessing it was going to be. So he can get the tea after all.
He heads by the tea shop first. He knows what he’s going for there. He’s browsing, and stops in shock, then grins. Steel Samurai loose leaf tea. It’s almost as if Edgeworth has his own private brand made for him or something.
The Chocolate Store has German chocolate. It’s a little pricey, but his boyfriend is worth it. …Now what.
He ends up wandering around the mall aimlessly for a while. He’s walking past the music store, when it hits him. Klavier would never say no to another CD, presuming it a) wasn’t country or b) wasn’t rap in English. He just has to make sure what he has, which would be difficult. Except for the fact that Trucy had mentioned something about visiting Klavier, so…
“Trucy, see Klavier’s music collection” he types out and hits send. He gets a response almost immediately.
“Why?”
“See if he has this CD” he replies. It becomes obvious that Trucy’s a much faster texter, not that that surprises him. And she’s pretty sneaky when she wants to be, so the secret of the present is probably safe. He ends up buying some really rare (and rather odd, but that’ll probably fascinate his boyfriend) CDs, one of which happens to be from a place called Nine Tails Vale.
He’s exhausted. He missed dinner while staring at all those ornaments, so grabs another muffin out of his backpack. It’s a little squished from all the ornaments and stuff, and it’s going a little stale, but it’s delicious and gives him enough strength to walk to the bus stop. It’s started to snow again. He can eat his final muffin on the bus.
